Thanks Chris_quilts! I did find some help on another board dating her - she's dated between 1903 and 1905. I can't wait to get her running! The sellers only wanted $40 for it because they just wanted it out of their house! it was taking up too much room they said! I was only too happy to help them out! LOL

The lady was dumbfounded that I actually wanted to get it running and *gasp* SEW with it! Why on earth would I want to do that? lol

hi all,
I just acquired a 1960 'Strawbridge and Clothier' zig-zag stitch sewing machine...i have the warranty and instruction manual. It's real clean... been trying to upload the picture but not working-will continue to work onthat tho, cause i'm so excited to share her picture! Am searching to find out what brand/where she originated - has the 'made in Japan' on the front label, but motor is 'made in the USA' (could be a new motor not sure)... needs a little work with wiring so haven't plugged her in just yet-not til I get that fixed... any information anybody has on where to look for more information would be great!

Is she an Avona? Or something else? Just curious.

Even Wilbur got in the act. I have some short stubby screwdrivers he was looking at pretty intensely... then he would giggle - hint hint Grandma... This is the kid that wears a Bob the Builder hat anywhere he is allowed... (I found a Bob the Builder shirt for his next Birthday.) He's a huge fan. Tools fascinate him. He comes to the right place. I sent him outside. My tools are my tools - even the cute screwdrivers - ggggrrrrrrrrrrrrr...
One of the nicest toys my kid ever got was not a toy. it was a collection of nuts and bolts in a container and a board with holes drilled through it to put the bolts through. Each bolt came with two nuts, and they were all different. He had to figure out which nut went with which bolt. The same person gave him a cardboard box stuffed with crumpled paper and taped shut and a bunch or roofing nails and a tack hammer to nail them into the box. He still has the nuts and bolts in a jar somewhere....loved it. Laura

I have two black 301 short beds, they sew really fast.
I bought a Singer 306 last week, I'm waiting for needles and bobbins. I have lots of pattern cams coming soon, won an ebay auction for 28 of them. It looks to be in good condition. Did I mention that this is a very heavy machine? Oh dear, the heaviest one I own. Glad that I bought locally and didn't have to pay shipping costs. I'll most likely do a motorectomy and treadle it.

Mine has dead wiring - treadling seems like a good plan - it turns very nice - I have a very nice box of the cams.

Now that nut and bolt board sounds like a good idea! Have to keep them away from his baby brother... My youngest son had his own hammer when he was about 3. When we built a house he pounded nails in the sub-floor - kept him busy for hours. Those floors never did squeak. He played in the pea gravel and hauled rocks in his little wheel barrel. He had real tools. Never did have toy tools. I think he was 14 or 15 when he had a plasma cutter and made yard art. My husband insisted both boys learn to sew before he would let them use a saw. He figured a piercing was better than an amputation. We had a treadle around and that got played with a lot.

I'd love some opinions on wether I should just clean and polish it, or should I try to strip the laquer? it has a few minor water rings and a little roughness to the top. I'd love to take care of those, but afraid of doing all the intricate lettering on the front and all grooves in the handles etc. I'm sure if I just did the top, the color would no longer match the rest of the machine.

Also - how do you repaint the iron legs/ treadle? or is that best just left alone?

Does anyone know more about this machine? the last patent date on the throat plate was 1900, and there's a news article in the drawer that gives the impression it was purchased around 1907. I found someone local who has an identical cabinet (not sure about the machine) and he has a warranty paper dated May 1909. The only number on it is on the front near the bobbin winder, and it's 81589.

thanks!
Beautiful White and cabinet! Here is the White dating site. Scroll down to Serial Number/Dating and look up your machine. Are you sure your serial number only has 5 digits? Is there a letter in front? If, in fact, your machine only has a 5 digit serial number it would be a pre 1900 machine according to the White site, and it doesn't look that old? Please let us know what you find out - you got a great buy with that machine and cabinet!

Oh, and you will have to sand blast the treadle irons and repaint them - not too hard a task! Or just apply Liquid Gold to the irons and they will look great!

Welcome home Charlee!

Well I took 8 machines to a community yard sale today at our local quilt store and I sold 5 of them! I was really glad to be able to cut my herd down a little as it was getting out of hand! I also ended up bringing one home! A really cute little tan and brown Sewmor zig zag machine. The lady with the machine practically shoved it in my car - she just gave me the machine and cabinet so she wouldn't have to haul it home! Anyway, I sold 2 Japanese 15's - the blue Morse, and a black Electra. I also sold a 99 hand crank - it went to a really good home! I had a New Home Light Running machine, and a Pfaff that is not really a Pfaff - it was made after Pfaff sold their name - that also sold! So I took 8 machines, came back with 4 counting the Sewmor given to me! I was happy! Now I can get some more of the ones I really like!

Oh and Candace it was great seeing you today!

Nancy

A friend gave this to me today. What is it? And what size needle does it take if I can tighten every thing up that is not frozen. It has more rust than paint. It is heavy for the size. The base is 8 ¼ x 13 ¼ .the teeth on hand crank wheel is not tight, the bobbin winder is very loose also.

Ohhhhhh its a Pawfoot machine!!!! One of these days I am going to get one but to answer your question I need to see a close up of the side view of the machine. It looks like a New Home but I need to dig in my records and see, but I warn you I do not have a lot on the pawfoots.... PM me with your email adress and I can send you what I find.
