    Becky's Crafts,

I used to work in an auto parts warehouse. I remember the gazillion little tinsy belts I had to stock. I do think you are correct, I'll see if I can get a belt master catalog from an auto parts place.

I asked at one of the auto parts shops months ago and they said to come in with a part number, even though I had a belt in my hands. So definitely try to get your hands on one of the books - a lot of the "newer" parts staff might not know how to look something up other than by part number.

And if you say it's for a sewing machine or a small motor application they're helpless. 99% of auto parts guys now only know how to punch in the make, model and year to their search computer and let it tell them what part they need.

To do research for a non standard item is beyond their capability.

It's not really their fault - they're not taught to find the obscure stuff. That comes with experience. That's why I head for the oldest looking person when I walk into any shop like that. Usually their heads don't explode when I ask for what I need. Sometimes they even have other suggestions I hadn't thought of.

I'm thinking of another type of shop too that might have belts. I'll investigate a little before I suggest it because I don't know the "type" of shop it would be in the US.

I have to look up the parts I need using the app and then show them the list of part numbers

I found the Gates belt company online but couldn't find what I was looking for. I think a phone call to a human might be in order.

    Steve,
Just in case it might help, here's the Gates site: { http://www.gates.com/ } There's a ton of info and they might have older catalogs for your Corvair.

Alright, I did a little legwork today. I went to Gregg Distributors. I think they're similar to Acklands/Grainger?
They measured a featherweight belt - 1/4" wide and 17 1/4" in circumference. They think a 2L180 Goodyear belt will fit. They didn't have any in stock but can order them for me - prepaid because it's special order.

My next goal is to try to find one elsewhere where I can make sure it's the right size - then go back to Gregg to order "in bulk". I've been told to ask for "2L V groove belts" and they come in smaller sizes though are likely not regular stock items for most industrial shops. Worth asking though.
