"Spike Your English" Block of the Month Quilt-Along
#363
Hi DogHouseMom, No I haven't done a thing with my blocks yet either. When I saw this BOM it really interested me. Glad we will be on this journey together!! Do you have any idea what fabrics or colors you will be using? I will look thru my stash this week and decide. I may have to go to the fabric shop for the background fabric what ever that will be. Decisions...decisions...decisions!!

THANKS Candi
this makes sense to me! I could even cut squares or triangles and then trace the placement with the template and leave it uncut until sewn.... hmmm now my brain is workin

Hello all! Lots of neat tips and ideas. I thought I'd share my tip in case someone is like me here lol. I never had success with cutting triangles and points with a template for PP..it seems like you have to think more and be more precise when placing it on the paper and check to make sure it fits and the point is always giving me toruble. I have decided long ago that squares and rectangles is all I need to cut! I measure with a ruler every piece across the longest and widest parts and cut a a square/rectangle to that measurement plus 1/2 to 3/4". Works for me every time. And yes, there is more waste but I do a lot of crumbs and miniature piecing that they are not really waste to me

Well, I made one-half of the first block today! I love how it is coming together. It is lots of pieces per block. I decided to cut 6 of each piece (one for each section) at the same time and I numbered each stack of 6. I figured out the size and shape of each piece and then they were ready for the other 5 sections and they went together quickly! It seemed better than having to figure each shape on all six sections. Make any sense?

I have decided that I am going to make TWO of the Spikers, one scrappy and one in my first color choices. The scrappy will be my practice piecing and I will not stress over mistakes, LOL. Have not purchased the fabrics yet, but received an Email from Hancocks of Paducah and they are having a sale and I may go with Timeless Treasures Willow Petal fabrics.
As a suggestion to the newbies, I also recommend the 1/4 inch ruler. I have both the six inch and twelve inch ruler. I know it sounds like a lot of work but I would also suggest doing a practice block before using your "good" fabric. It took me a long time to "wrap my brain" around paper piecing.

Still trying to decided on what to do have so much fabric need to use what I have. Because I just bought a new to me machine and now the fabric budget is pretty slim for awhile.
