The Cinderella and Margaret can't be converted to a handcrank with out a lot of jury-rigging. The motor boss doesn't line up with the long axis of the main shank. Also the bushing on the main shank is the wrong sized outside diameter to fit with a spoked hand wheel. On my LOOOOOOOOOONG to do list ( ) I plan on replacing that bushing with an old Singer one, which hopefully will fit. IF it fits, I then plan on making an adapter so the I can attach a hand crank. Someday I'll get around to it. Those Cinderella and Margaret machine are such cuties.
They do sew fairly well, but are made very cheaply.

Great pictures! I have a Cinderella, and what is interesting to me is that the body that is cast in one piece on most machines all comes apart. Does make it a lot lighter! I wanted to make it into a handcrank, but apparently the handwheel doesn't line up right.
That Alden is a cute little machine too.

Miriam,
A knob screwed into the handwheel would work, but I'm lazy and don't want to drill if I don't have to.
Consider the guy on eBay OUTED!!!!. Here is a pix of the window crank he uses and it even has the same patent number on the handle. It does take a fair amount of work to make one like he is selling, but you could do it considerably cheaper. I think the crank that I took a pix of was around $6.00.

Cathy, why not jut put a knob on the balance wheel? Good for one crank around anyway - keep a kid happy and busy. I suppose the trick would be to get it to come out straight. http://www.ebay.com/itm/FEATHERWEIGH...item2c62f937d4 seems like a stiff price though. Has to be a way to do this for much less money. Maybe a window roller part...

Miriam,
To remove the front and rear covers you need to remove one screw on the back and unscrew the stitch length lever.
The bed plate is also held on with screws. I attached a few pix.

Is this machine as light or less than a FW? I got to see this one's guts at Cathy's house. Pretty cool!

Candace,
The Cinderella head without the motor or base weighs about 12 pounds. the base and motor weigh considerably more.
So the Featherweight is still the featherweight.
