love your fabrics Donna! I'm not a big fan of batiks, so while the colors are bright, I've missed my calicos!

[QUOTE=Teen;8018124]Pretty fabric used in your blocks, Donna!! That first one is one of my favorite blocks so far that I did.
I'm with you, Teen. Mother's Delight turned out to be a really pretty block. I'm enjoying being exposed to so many new ones. I'll be interested to see your border idea. I haven't even given a thought to how I will end this project - it's just too far in the future. |
Wow Teen, gorgeous!!!!!!
Macebaby, I love batiks!! |
Had an urgent counseling session today so I had to go into office......but, I at least completed 3 more blocks. Will take pictures tomorrow with tomorrow's bunch, if all goes well.
Have a lovely weekend!!! |

6 more completed...though New Mexico was a bit challenging...it finished just under 6 1/2 so good enough for me. Remind me to never do this block again until I have 20 years experience. Just saying...
|
Ha! And even with so many years......:D :D
Love your blocks Teen! Very well done. Don't ask how many of my blocks finished under 6.5"....... Did I tell I started Sylvia right after I started piecing? So it was a huge learning curve! |
I've seen your blocks, Anael.....no way would I have guessed you just started piecing. Your blocks looked wonderful.. Most of my blocks are finishing close to or exact. If they don't, I do it again. I've re-made a few I couldn't live with. No way was I gonna re-do NM...I hated that block....I may do another block and just replace it. I've gone through my blocks and fixed some that I overlooked missed seam matching but other than that, we'll see what this will look like. New Mexico block is probably a lot easier as a 12 1/2".... Lol!!
|
Awwww thank you Teen!! The one I hated the most was that Peter/Paul block. I even don't remember the exact name, something with robbing.....hahahaha. I really, really hated that one. There were more I didn't like but that one.......arghhhhhhhhhh :(
Some blocks are easier when larger. That's another option: substitute 4 blocks for 1 12.5" block.....hahaha |

Robbing Peter to Pay Paul.....I've seen this one and have been procrastinating making it. Lol....I'll give it one shot....gonna work on some applique blocks tonight after dinner but today, I completed 4 more.. Total count is 79....
|
Beautiful Teen! It's going to be a stunning quilt :)
Yes, that's the one, Robbing Peter to pay Paul.......who did come up with that name? I kept the block and it's in the quilt but I never liked it. |
I'll agree that some of these blocks have no business being 6"!
Love how yours are turning out Teen, love the pop of yellow that shows up periodically. Mine's had to go to the back burner for a while. I agreed to make a quilt to hang at work and that gets priority for a while. |

I had a very productive weekend in my quilting area and managed to turn some out. Teen, I love your New Mexico block - I can see it will be a challenge and will hold off on that one for awhile. These are probably the only ones I'll get to this week, as I am watching my grandkids this week while their parents are out of town and will spend my time engrossed in them - and wouldn't have it any other way. We're making great progress, ladies!

Wow, Donna! You really created some beautiful blocks. I absolutely love all your fabrics. The black contrasting on that first one is gorgeous!!! Your paper-piecing is fantastic! I'm really liking the scrappy look of your colorway. You will probably have no problem on the New Mexico block, Donna. Some blocks are just not as friendly to me while others have no issues with them. I found a "back-up" block to use in its replacement from the Farmer's Wife Sampler I'll probably make. Have fun with the grandbabies.
I'm going to be working on finishing up all the applique blocks today. Designed some borders for this project this weekend and will also, begin working on those appliqués. Need to get a bit of packing done since I try doing a little bit everyday so it's not so overwhelming when we have a move date. Macybaby... Things come up and shift priorities....you are determined and will no doubt get back to this. I'll look forward to seeing your finished top. So far, it's gorgeous as is your 365. I will need to work on a QOV soon so I'll lose a week working on SBS. Thank you for the lovely comments.... |
Ladies, all the blocks are BEEEautiful!!! Love them all!

Thank you, laurafet!!!
I Love appliqué.... I think I just have the posie block left to appliqué. Ran out of time.... |
Everyone's blocks are gorgeous. I can't believe how quickly you are making them. I made 20 Farmers Wife blocks in one month and thought I was doing great, great in my group though. 20 blocks in one month, that is not even a block a day. Love looking at your blocks everyday.
|
DonnaPea, I can only second Teen, she said it all ;) Your blocks are wonderful, your pp is great!
Have fun with the grands !! Teen, I love looking at your blocks. The splash of yellow makes it very interesting. Beautiful appliqué and very well done! Macebaby, have fun with the quilt for your work. Please show it when finished? |

Teen, I love your applique, especially the first one with the pop of yellow and the black polka dots. Your quilt is going to be stunning. I managed to squeeze in 2 quickie blocks before the gang gets here.

Teen- you mentioned doing your applique by machine with invisible thread. Are you doing that with these?
I would love to see a close up of how the stitching looks, if you are willing to share. Donna - more wonderful blocks! They are addicting! |
Donna.....you rock on Y-seams. The bow tie looks great!!
Macybaby.....I don't use invisible thread though that is certainly an option. I use thread color that matches the applique and use a micro-zigzag so it is barely seen. I just prefer seeing minimal thread on my applique and is a personal preference. I'll take a closeup of one of the blocks for you. i counseled today so no blocks completed...tho, after dinner I'll cut a few in preparation of doing some tomorrow. |

Close-up of applique stitching... Zigzag: .5 width and .9 length. I use my N foot because the edge of the fabric lines up perfectly. I use Schmetz Microtex needle 70/10 so needles holes are tiny. I like the look of my appliqués with this technique. I'm not one for blanket stitch or satin stitch unless it is for decorative purposes...tho, others have done a beautiful job with these techniques. I do not care for raw edge so, as mentioned before, these are turned edge using Appliquick method.
|
Thank you so much Teen for your detailled explanation and pictures. That really helps!
|
Teen - Thanks for the close-up of your applique. It is beautiful. I am not a big fan of applique in general, prefer piecing & pieced quilts. Yours is just about perfect, I'd say.
|
Thanks Teen - your method turns out really nice. I've typically done satin stitch, but agree that it only looks good when it's part of the embellishment, and I don't care for it when the block needs to stand on it's own.
I'm taking a class this weekend to hopefully learn how to use the embroidery part of my Babylock Destiny. I've only used it for a few small projects so far (the machine, have not done any embroidery with it yet). I love my Juki, but it's a straight stitch only machine. |
Have fun Macebaby, I have a Brother Innov-is 1500D. Working on some embroideries right now.

Thank you ladies and you are so welcome. I've tried lots of applique techniques and this is it for me. A lovely quilt shop owner in Big Bear Mountains taught me how to do this when I shopped her store one day. She was awesome and so helpful! I bought her Row By Row, too, which I haven't done. Anywhoooo..I have the Babylock Symphony and I so want the Destiny. I played with it in the store and a friend bought one. It is a very cool machine. Have fun in the class.....there are so many features on that thing that a class is necessary, at least for me.
Anael....please share your embroidery work. I'd love to see it. Visited with my LA quilter today when I dropped off 2 quilts. She is so fun. Shared my adventure with Sylvia and she wants to see the blocks. She may just do this quilt though she really prefers LA to piecing. Taught her applique and she was off and running. Lol!! Love that! 4 completed today...tomorrow is my 31st Anniversary so a day with DH... |

Happy Anniversary Teen, hopefully you will have a wonderful day with DH!
Here are some pictures of what I'm working on now. The designs are from Hatched in Africa. It's going to be a quilt. For now I only finished a few embroideries :D |
Aneal - those are so pretty! I'm looking forward to learning how to use the embroidery part, and do plan on using it for quilt blocks. I already have several software packages that I've bought on sale.
We have some not so nice weather coming in, and I'm really hoping it will hold off so I can make it in Friday AM. I'm going to stay the night in town and it should all be done by Saturday morning, so the roads should be cleared off by the time I need to head home. And if I have to go slow and it takes me three hours to get home, taht is not a big deal. And now that we are on Daylight Savings Time, it will still be light out by the time I get home, even if it does take extra long. South Dakota is a rural state, and we also do not have State Income taxes, so there is not a lot of funds for snow removal, and a lot of wide open spaces. |
here is a sneak peak at the project that has interrupted my Sylvia quilt.
The are not full assembled, that will happen after the students decorate them. They will be 17x18 finished. http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c3...psjfg8yvxq.jpg http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c3...psiaygx2o8.jpg http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c3...pskf4ti4rp.jpg |
Wow, I am impressed with your houses. AND your Sylvia bridal sampler. Gorgeous work.
|
Oh Macebaby, those are lovely houses!!!! Can you show them again after decoration, please?
|
Macybaby - I love your cute houses. And Teen, I love your C-10 - such a nice surprise to see that black in the corners. It really sets off that block. I am stepping aside for a very short time - just received an invitation to a baby shower, so am going to make a quick baby quilt and will focus on that. I'll get back to Sylvia just as soon as the baby quilt is done. I am truly addicted now to these blocks!
|
Stunning Anael! Love them.
|
Macy, your houses are adorable!! Is that a pattern, or your designs?
|
Take your time DonnaPea, we will be here when you return :)
Thanks Laurafet! I really enjoy making them. Still have a few to go :D |
laurafet - I bought the pattern from Craftsy
https://www.craftsy.com/quilting/patterns/wonky-houses-wallhanging/307158 I needed to make them larger so used the pictures in the instructions and drew them out on my 17x18 paper. I need 11, so after doing the once from the pattern, I looked online for more ideas and then did up five more. I'm going to end up with partial seams, and a few Y seams, but I can live with that. |
Anael.....your embroidery is absolutely gorgeous... This will make a stunning quilt. Love the black background. It really makes those colors pop off the fabric. Just gorgeous.... Thank for the anniversary greeting.
Macybaby..... Your houses are adorable. I have the Wonky House pattern from silky that I want to do. The whole thing is PP so I put it aside to practice PP before I tackle it. After Sylvia, I'll be well prepared to take that on. Lol! Be careful in your journey to class and home. SD weather can be unpredictable and, as you said, it's rural so he safe. Donna....thank you for the nice comment about C10. I love how that turned out, too. I am hustling to get more done but took a break today to play with DH for our anniversary. Just got home a bit ago and whipped one block out....just I'm off and running again so I'll be here when you return. |
Thank you Teen and you're very welcome ;)
