Way to go! Like them. I had so many issues with bear paw- in this one and another sampler that was larger blocks. Don't know what I do wrong.
|
Laurafet...bear claw is easier to piece than PP, which is what I did...at least for me it was. However, I'm still missing a point but, whatever!! Lol! My perfectionism is really being tested with this project...
|
Correction above....I meant it's easier to PP than piece. Lol...
My block count to date: 89. Getting close to 100...maybe this weekend... |
Oh my, how do you do that? I was lucky being able to make 2 a day!! Beautiful and all so pointy :D Very well done Teen!
|
Thank you! 3 a day may not be the case soon....I'm approaching Y-Seam territory...ugh!!!
|
Once you mastered that everything is possible :) :)

way to go teen! Those tiny HST are something else . . .
I ended up canceling going to the class, since I woke up to ice on the windows and didn't want to chance the 80 mile drive. I told my husband I didn't want to go in the ditch and wreck my $$$$ new sewing machine. He said I should be worried about going in the ditch and wrecking my $$$$$ new car (bought end of December). The bad part - the weather didn't get as bad as predicted, so I probably could have gone and been ok. The worst part is I'm still intimidated by the machine. I may have to watch some classes and get brave enough to mount a hoop and play around a bit. I've got lots and lots of thread and stablizer . . . just not brave enough. Teen, for sewing Y seams, I sew the first seam all the way to the end. Then I finger press it to the side, and line up the second piece so the part where I want to end is lined up with that seam. I sew down to the seam and back tack. Then I carefully remove the end stitches on the first seam back to were the second seam meets it. Then I carefully fold so that I can line up for the second seam. I let the fabric stay tucked in and so far I've never sewn it. Then I start at the inside edge (where the three seams meet) and back tack, and sew to the end. Then I take it to the iron and press. I'm pretty sure it takes longer to write this out than it does to do one. Even the really small ones are easy. The main thing is to be careful lining up the first side do you get the piece down low enough so it will line up correctly when you do the second side. If you don't have it exact, you will find you need to sew the second side with the edge of the fabric not meeting exactly, but a bit more or less normally won't be a problem. Just keep the overlap the same for the length of the seam. Do not angle the second seam, or it won't lay flat. If you are sewing in a corner block, you can cut it a bit larger to start, and then trim it after the block is done. That way if you get it in a bit off, you'll still have enough for the outer seam allowance. |
Go for it Macebaby, read the manual and hoop the fabric. It's really not as hard as you think. I never took a class, they're not offered here.

Donna - love the orange/yellow block!
Teen - yours are turning out very nice. And it's always nice to have an excuse to stop at the LQS, though sometimes I need blinders when I go in so I don't get distracted and walk out with way more than I was looking for. My first PP was doing the 50 Stars challenge on this board, using Carol Doak's book. I made it through all 50, but have not done anything with them. So they are one of my longer term UFO's. I never could get good at sewing sections together until I started removing the paper first. I bought the 6" and 12" add a quarter rulers, and bought a 6" add an eighth ruler. I'm not using them at all with the CMIYC quilt. I did use them when I did the Fire Island Hosta quilt by Judy N, however I did not sew on the papers with that one, just used them as a template. I have another PP project that is also a UFO - I started making roses. They finish around 6". http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c3...pseblbogbx.jpg http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c3...psscdizjvf.jpg And I liked doing them as a group too. This was before I upgraded my machine to one with a thread cutter. It was very tedious cutting all the threads. http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c3...psx03rsrlk.jpg |

Omgosh, Macybaby.....I so wish I read this before I attempted the Y-seam. I watched a bunch of youtubes and they all do it differently. These are so tiny that not all techniques will work. Shoot!! Thank you so much for these instructions. I printed them out.
Ok....I did ONE block with Y-seams galore and it didn't turn out too bad but I may re-do a side triangle tomorrow. This block was challenging because I have never cut 45 degree pieces (OMG...took forever to conceptualize with my straight ruler since I don't have a 45. Felt so stupid)...and I've never sewn these shapes together before so it took some practice pieces to figure how to line them up.....then, I picked the one block that has 8 Y-seams in it. One success is that it came out 6 1/2"...hahahaha! So, F9 is below for your viewing pleasure. Lol!! However, please take note of B3 - Cross & Crown. I found some teal fabric that looks like wood in my stash.....can you believe that? Perfect! I got so excited over this stupid fabric that the pain of F9 went away...Ha! 3 completed today takes me to 92!!!!! Woohoo! |
Perfect blocks Teen!!!
|
Sue s q, the roses are from Piece By Number, called Rosie's Rose. I've bought a lot of their PP patterns, they are very affordable.
Teen, your Y seams look pretty good. I've also seen a lot of different methods out there, and think many of them make it way more work than it needs to be (same with bindings). For a few of the blocks, I didn't feel like Y seams so cut triangles and put a seam up the middle instead. |
ok, with Anael's incourgament, I pulled out the book and figured out how to get the hoop set up and did a simple design.
This is a big step for me, I've owned the machine for 10 months and this is the first time doing embrodery. This is actaully my second embroidery machine. I bought a used Pfaff several years ago, and never did figure that one out. DH loves the machine though, so he's got it now. Not that he ever plans on doing any embroidery with it. http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c3...pstnjlo8qs.jpg |
Very nice! I had no doubt you'd figure this out. You are a marvel so clearly, this was bigger in your head then reality. Lol! Go for it and let ur rip, girl!!!
I completed only 2 today....I'll post later.... |
Wow, that is an ambitious quilt project. I’ll be watching to see all the beauty you all create. Have fun.

YES YES YES Macebaby, gorgeous!!!!! You see you can do it!! Now you can embroider whatever you want. One day you will master multi hooping too :)
Teen, more Y seams! Well done! Love your blocks - as usual :D :D |

This is another hobby. I can't ride my bike right now but most days I'm going out with my camera and take pictures. This one is from this morning, it's a fieldfare in my back yard.

Wow, lots of activity on here over the weekend. Teen, love seeing some new fabric showing up in your blocks, especially the woody looking one and the cute yellow in J-10. Beautiful bird, beautiful embroidery, beautiful blocks - nice way to start the week. My baby quilt is coming along nicely, so I stopped and treated myself to 2 more Sylvia blocks. Well done DonnaPea! The yellow with the larger print looks very familiar to me, I might have the same or something very similar.
|
Oh, Anael.....lovely picture....you have diverse talents. I take pictures to just take pictures so I admire photos taken with the eye for beauty. How is your hip?
Donna....hope your time with the grandbabies was fun and loving. Would love to see the baby quilt when done. Your blocks look wonderful. I am Going through the teal and yellow stash that I had and had to dig a little deeper to find more. I should have enough of all fabric to finish the remain blocks and applique borders. Other than some of the white and yellow, this sampler is made with stash fabric, which is awesome since it is a controlled colorway. DH is out of the house this morning and I always clean his den when he's gone so I'm off to do that. Cut out some blocks last night and will sew them up today. Have a beautiful day! |
Awww thanks Teen!!
Just 2 more days before I have my appointment with the surgeon. I'm still on painkillers though it seems I'm getting used to the pain - again :( Or the numbness is getting worse......also possible. Have you designed the borders yet? I'm so curious LOL. |
I'll be thinking of you, Anael, and hope that the issue is quickly resolved and you are pain free soon. I know this pain well.
I have designed the flowers I will be using in the border and have cut out templates for them. I'll make up a few and share this week. |

3 more today... 43 remaining...

Macybaby, great job on getting your feet wet with your machine. I hope you weren't too overwhelmed!
Teen, that wood grain fabric was a nice find. It matches beautifully. The addition of the black fabric was a surprise. It looks great. Woot, woot, 43 more to go. Keep going, you can do it! Anael, that little bird is beautiful. You have some mad skills when it comes to photography. That is an awesome photograph. DonnaPea, great blocks. Keep up the good work. |
Thank you, Judith! I used black and yellow contrasting throughout the blocks. Just wanted to give the quilt an anchor. I think black and yellow are my signatures colors in quilts. I love using them. It's getting close!!
Worked on applique border pieces tonight. I should have some samples to share but not the actual border yet. I'm going to have to audition border when quilt top done and maybe add other floral shapes....we'll see. |
Thank you Judith!!
Beautiful blocks Teen! Just a few more and you're finished :D |

I was going through my strings for the new quilt along, and found a couple of nice lengths of the light blue batik that I'll be using for sashing. Hopefully I'll have enough, and if not I'll punt when I get there!
I aslo found a couple of handfuls of batik scraps in the bottom of one of the jars - wish I'd have found them before completing all the blocks. I do plan on doing some peicing for the border so I added them to the rest of my batik scraps. The only down side to doing this sampler - every time I think about I start humming " and the operator says 40 center - for the next three minutes pleeeaaase! Mrs. Avery I just want to to talk to her . . . " https://www.google.com/search?q=silv...nt=firefox-b-1 |
Goooooooooodbeyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy .......................
Forgot all about that song!! Thanks Macebaby :) |
Just beautiful!

Love that song, Macybaby!! Now I'll be singing it all day. Continuous loop! I should get even with you and hum "It's A Small World Afterall..." But I'm not mean...lol!!!
i found a stack of 10" batiks with no colorway. Just a bundles of misc colors the LQS put together and I thought of you, Macybaby. I'm not a fan of batiks but will come up with something. I thought about doing the quilt along on Angela's awesome pattern but I'm trying to stay focused on SBS. Donna....here is the quilt I made with your yellow fabric... Lol... It's pink flowers but same stuff. DH is working the air show this week and will be out of the house for 3 days starting Thrusday so SBS and I are gonna kick some patooty... I'll have some applique flowers considering for border to share with you today. |
Beautiful quilt Teen.
|
I'll second that is a beautiful quilt!
I've got my Service Awards banquet tonight, so will be heading out shortly. This is my 15th year so I'll be one to get an award along with the other staff that is having a 5 year anniversary. We have a lot of lifers at work, so 15 years isn't that much of an accomplishment. We'll see if I can make it another ten. I'll be over 65 by then, so I may cut out a bit sooner. I think I'll be getting back to my SBS this weekend, start putting the sashing on the outer group of blocks. |
BTW - I am really bad about getting ear wigs - I listen to the oldies station going to work, and sometimes I'll have the same song in my head for days!
Though one of the worst - when I was learning PP, I watched Carol Doak's vidoe, and at one point she said "think - I am woman" and give it a good pull! Of course, every time I did PP for the next year, I was humming that song in my head. |

Lol...Me, too, Macybaby!! Songs stick in my head! Congratulations on 15 years....that is a huge accomplishment! Enjoy tonight...Here's hoping that the next few years fly by for you so you can stay home and quilt....*high five*
Here are the applique flowers I designed for border. I will make these is a variety of the fabrics that are through-out the blocks but the dark blue petal one will be the primary color combination and reverse the fabrics and so on.... I really like them...I'll be framing the blocks with 2 mini borders...not sure what colors yet....probably yellow and the dark blue fabric. These, of course, are turned edge and will be machine appliquéd how I've shared with you all. |
Teen great job on the flowers. This quilt sure is going to be a show stopper when you are finished.
Congrats Macybaby. I think 15 years is quite an accomplishment!! I do hope you get to retire when you want to. Enjoy tonight. |

Teen - I love the quilt you posted - those are my kind of fabrics! And your applique flowers are beautiful - what a gorgeous quilt you will have. I too thought about joining in on that scrap quilt-along, but will save that for another time after Sylvia is all done. And Macybaby - congratulations on your award. Still focusing mostly on my baby quilt these days, but just have to squeeze in a Sylvia block or two.
|
DonnaPea, Great job! Your colors are beautiful. I'm glad you were able to squeeze in a couple of "you" blocks. Keep adding in a block or 2 and before you know it, you'll be done. You'll be shaking your head wondering if you are actually done and ready to put them together.
|
Macebaby, congrats on the award!
Teen, lovely flowers! I guess you need lots of them :) DonnaPea, more beautiful blocks. Well done! |
