Here are my blocks from last week. I forgot to post. I actually feel as if I can do paper piecing now. I took a Judy Niemeyer class in January (by a local teacher) and I used her method on block A8. |
Beautiful blocks giquilt! I love the background fabric.
Isn't it great to learn new things? |

Great pictures everybody, thanks for sharing! I have my 7th week blocks finished tonight so will post them before I forget. These blocks are sure a lesson in being careful to keep the ¼" seam ;)

Love those colors! Hope my blocks turn out looking half as good as yours!

More beautiful blocks to inspire us all,

In honor of Valentine's day, I used hearts fabric in my blocks this week.
Also has anyone ever heard of where Swamp Angel name came for the block? I have seen it in several times BOM, but no one has said how it got it's name. |

Great blocks giquilt! The Swamp Angel block is an Ohio Star variation : http://fieldguidetoquilts.com/1Star/...arCousins.html
When you google Swamp Angel you will find some interesting things and not only about quiltblocks :) |

Good time to post my blocks that I have finished: Shoo Fly is "weather the storms together" as a couple. Swamp Angel is just representing a swamp bayou where many have hidden and some have flourished.

Great blocks QNS and lovely fabrics!

Karen G needle turn on posey block
I used a modified freezer paper and needle turn on mine. I cut out the shape in freezer paper, with shiny side toward backside of fabric. Then iron on and cut including seam allowance. I press the seam allowance around the edges. Often just fingerpress. Then I remove the freezer paper and appliqué. My seam allowance is already folded and easy to turn under with the needle. No starch, mess or drying time.

Beautiful Anael, I love your choice of fabrics, now off to the sewing room, I think I am adding another project to my list:D
|
LOL Mirabelle, you didn't have enough projects :D :D :D Me, I have to force myself to make a block :(
|
Very nice, all of the blocks we have seen so far. I am trying to finish a few other things before going great guns on this. I'll catch up though.
|
I have also decided to attempt to work with the rest of you in making these blocks. Of course I'm behind, but hope to catch up sooner or later. I'll post a picture or two when I'm about caught up. So many of the blocks are just beautiful so I want to make them too. Keep me inspired!
|
Welcome to the group laurafet and MamaHen! You don't have to keep up with the schedule, that's up to you. We would love to see the blocks you made :)

Reading this thread got me interested in the book,so I ordered it from amazon at a god price, it came yesterday, I eagerly opened it, but now am a bit disappointed in the directions of some of those blocks......all those odd shaped, sized templates, PP on some that really don't need it, and the worst I saw so far was then GFG block.....that seems to be the hardest way to do it...why not just EPP...well maybe I am being too harsh and judgmental...I was thinking of following along with you on this project.....
Tell me...are you , or most of you, doing this with preplanned color pallette or are you just winging it? I haven't decided which way to go yet...will have to think about this.... If I continue this adventure, I think I would like to have this book rebound by office max with that plastic ringer type spine they do, makes keeping book flat opened so much easier...... |
Geri, welcome! I used EQ quite a lot to redraw blocks to get rid of the odd shapes. I love PP so did that a lot, even when not really needed.
I started with a certain colour pallette, green and blue and WOW background but it turned out to be quite the same as my first Sylvia so I changed it a bit, using yellow in the blocks as well as background fabric. So you might say I'm doing it scrappy :) |
My background fabric will all be the same yellow gold, but everything else will be cut from my scrap container. They are all good pieces but not big enough or enough of to do any thing else with, so once I use that scrap for a block, those scraps of that scrap is going into file 13!
|
I'm using mostly blues/browns/beiges/pale yellow from pieces, I don't have any yardage of the fabrics I'm using. The directions would certainly not pass muster if you were judging it as a learn to piece book.
|
I'll be joining too after I finish the quilt I'm quilting right now. I'm hoping to have that one finished by the end of this month. I'll have to catch up, but that's not a big problem as I have plenty of free time at the moment.
I'm going to be using a light background fabric along with green and magenta colors. Here's to hoping it will turn out the way I think it will :) |
I am going with a creamy background, and a lot of different blues from my scrap bins that all have other colors in them, so that brings in some variation. I guess I'm just too traditional and OCD for a true scrappy.

If I continue this adventure, I think I would like to have this book rebound by office max with that plastic ringer type spine they do, makes keeping book flat opened so much easier......
I have a dark royal blue/navy background with lots of different medium/light/bright for the other pieces. I have used a lot of different methods on the blocks so far. This week I thought the wedding ring block should have just been pieced by rotary cut, squares --->1/2 triangles, but the sizes were not full 1/4 inches and it was easier to PP. Welcome to all recently joined members. I was not going to do this quilt, this year either, but have enjoyed ever minute of working on the blocks. |
I did do the first block in the book.....came out fine.. I do find the directions for piecing and the diagrams that accompany are a bit lacking. The next one I tried was the anvil...i think on the next page...am nowhere near my sewing cave now.....anyway...when I looked at the pic and then read the directions...I thought they were mixed up. Look at the pic, you can clearly see by the seams.....HSTs and squares...not trapazoids and triangles.....so that was what I did....worked fine and easier to do than the printed way.....wonder how many more of the blocks are more complicated than they really should be....I think this book is a bit dated looking at the copyright date.
Reminding me of dear jane....some were so convoluted it was not worth continuing........my theory being if you are not having fun, then you are missing the joy of quilting.....so I will carefully read each direction carefully and decide if I want to do this.....having to flip back and forth copying templates, reading directions(?) is not the best format. IMHO |
As long as the blocks.are 6.5" unfinished you can make them in any way you want. There's no quilt police telling you otherwise.
I started my first Sylvia just after I started quilting and had to trouble following the directions or diagrams. |

Here are my latest blocks, Lancaster Rose took me 3 days but I was happy with it when I finished..
|
Gorgeous Mirabelle!! Time well spent :)
Isn't it strange what camera's can do with pictures? I know the background on your Lancaster Rose is the same as the second picture, yet the Rose is all yellowish....... |
Mirabelle, such beautiful blocks. I really love your little yellow flowers. I'm working on mine still, have got 11 done, soon as I catch up i'll post a picture.
|
Mirabelle your blocks are beautiful! Thanks Anael for posting the new blocks!
