I just received and reported a "phishing email" for my Amazon credit card. It was a very realistic looking with all the logos and button to go to bank's website. This is a very common scam where they stated that they had disabled my account until I gave them needed information. If this happens to you DO NOT CLICK THE LINKS PROVIDED. Go to website on back of your card or statement or call the 800 number provided. I took a screenshot of the email and forwarded to bank's email that handles phishing emails. Your credit provider or bank will never call or email you to ask for information, if it happens never use contact information they give you, use information you already have in hand.

If a caller isn’t in my contact list, my cell phone doesn’t ring. The call is registered and the caller can leave a voicemail. I rarely have a voicemail from these unknown callers. I avoid all kinds of scams.

DH just got one earlier today. "Amazon" supposedly wanted $40 to renew my Prime membership. 1. Prime membership is a lot more than $40. 2. Mine renews automatically in January, charged to the credit card on file. 3. "Amazon" called the house phone, which is not the phone number associated with my account.

We get a call on the house phone at least once a week about "suspicious charges on your account." Again, that's the wrong phone number, and Amazon sends me a confirmation text to my cell when I make a purchase. No text, no charges.

Well, I guess there is some comfort knowing that I am not alone in this scam experience. My financial institution calls it by its real name and it is fraud. I fell for it for a little while but no money lost. Lots of time wasted doing clean up so these folks could not access any of my financial accounts. Had to pay to have my computer "cleaned" and "checked" to make sure they had not left behind any bugs that would allow them continued access. Done and done and a wiser person now.

The calls I got were from London. First Clue, Second clue was they asked me to lie about the purpose of a money transfer. Third clue was to not call my financial institution . Three clues and I was done. Asked them to call me back in an hour becasue I was busy. They called me back 10 times in less than 5 minutes but I did not answer. I was on my way to get help to protect my accounts. I can now join the scammed club.

I never answer my landline phone unless I recognize the number - my lawn person will call to let me know he’s in the way or the same with my pest control, people. My good friend and I usually just text or FaceTime. If it’s important the person will leave a message - and I have had some weird messages, most of which are still junk. I use my iPad almost every day and haven’t used my PC for months as she’s not well and needs to see the computer doctor. If only there was a permanent way to stop these scammers - but they always find a way around. Plus - excuse my words, I’m not trying to be rude but almost always they have an Indian accent, I am well acquainted with this accent and I can spot it all the time. I, too rarely get a real phone call except from my husband when he’s away and I know his cell number plus his name pops up, I have a friend who fell for the computer scam several years ago (she’s not very tech) and it cost her several hundred dollars plus the cost of having an actual local repair person fix her computer back to normal. I feel really bad for older people who fall for these scams - I’m almost 74 and most of my friends are quite a bit older and we are not stupid about just about anything, especially these scams, Please keep letting any older friends who might be tempted to just say “no” or better, just hang up without a word!!!!

And the IRS (or your country's equivalent) will never call you on the phone and demand that you pay your back taxes with gift cards. The police will not be on your doorstep to arrest you in two hours. Nor will an agent from the CIA, FBI, NSA, NCIS, AFT, DHS, or any other government alphabet agency. DH used to work for one of the alphabet agencies, so when the "IRS" called and demanded $5000 or a [government agent*] would be arresting me, I said "There's a [government agent] sitting across the room from me. He can do it and save someone else the trip." Scammer hung up in microseconds.

*DH has asked that I don't identify his agency.

I was getting that phone call for quite a while. I guess they gave up on me because I haven't gotten one for while. Be careful everyone.

If I don't recognize the number, I answer and remain silent. Robocalls will hang up because they respond to voice. "People" will say, "Hello?" Filters out a lot of scam calls.
