totally agree!

I've home educated mine for the last 12 years (graduated 2 boys and the daughter is almost finished). Best thing I've ever done. It's not for everyone though, I understand that. ;)

I can understand a zero tolerance for sharp knives and guns.
I can understand a zero tolerance for illegal drugs and alcohol.
The permenant marker thing, I think the kid should have had to clean all the desks and/or other items with grafiti to show someone has to clean it off and its not very enjoyable. Let them see actions have consequences. I remember someone had to clean gum off the bleachers when they put gum under a desk. They never did it again.
Inhalers as they are needed should be talked about with all involved, teacher, child, parent, and principal. Parents should inform severity of condition to the teacher and principal and the child should be instructed with all there not to bring it out to show other kids but rather only when he/she needs to use it. Maybe even help provide sugestions where to carry it so other children can't get to it as there are risks to others.
Schools need to work with parents and visa versa.

What the heck could he have possibly been doing with a marker to get him arrested? Don't the police have any sense either?

My granddaughter goes to a private school. One little boy has been going to see the school counselor because he hugs everyone but the kids that bully get away with it.

The school enrollment has gone way down because the principal chooses to ignore the bullying. I know a little girl whose nose was broken by another little girl when she pushed her down.

I can't imagine why this child was arrested. Do you know what the parents did about this? Hopefully this won't follow this child for the rest of his life.

If they live in a larger city, it might be gang related. Students tag or mark their territory with spray paint and markers. My guess is it might have been something to do with that. In a city I worked as an assistant principal we had remodeling done on the bathrooms. The first week it was finished three 4th graders tagged the bathroom with markers with their gang signs. I called the parents and gave them a choice, their child could be suspended for gang graffitti or they could have in-school suspension with me and spend half the day cleaning the school and half doing their school work. Two parents said 'keep them' and one parent came to get his son, that was, until I showed him the writing in the bathroom and he knew instantly it was his son's 'artwork' and then he said, "Make him clean the entire school!" He was so embarrassed and ashamed of his son. They had in-school suspension/cleaning duty for most of a week and after that I found one of them telling another child, "Keep your hands off the wall, we just cleaned that!" Another one of the boys came to tell me they needed to clean the windows again because someone put fingerprints all over it. It was amazing that they were taking so much pride in their school.

I know at our high schools we run the students through metal detectors and check their backpacks and we confiscate all permanent markers or sharp metal objects.

It makes you wonder what the circumstances were with this child that was arrested.

We live in a time where REAL criminals are released from the over-crowding jails OR they are not arrested at all - and a BOY is sent to jail??? What in the world is happening to us??

this crap has been going on for a long time my DS is 44 and a kid pulled a chair out from under him and he cracked hia head on the cement floor and the princapal did not want to do anything about it i told him i wanted the kid punished and the kids came to my house and were mad because the kid got detention for 3 days and my son had a big lump on his head with a mild concusion

Good Heavens! Even 4th graders? I hadn't thought about the gang related stuff.
I personally think teachers have a hard job. They have to deal with both the kids and parents. Not a job I'd want any time soon.

Sadly, but yes, even the kindergarteners and 1st graders. Sometimes it is really hard to find the joy in teaching.
