Default carb counter book

I'm looking for a book that lists carbs in foods in 100 gram portions (or just grams) - any suggestions? There are so many different books out there and reviews are all over the place. I'd like a paperback so I can take it shopping with me and I'm not interested in carb/calorie count of resturant/fast food places. And I don't need to know the theory behind keto. I just want a book that lists carbs of fruits, veggies &/or meats & cheese. Any help will be appreciated.

Do you have a cellphone that you carry? You could look for an app to use for calorie counting.

Well,nutritional labels required on all processed foods will give you the answers you are looking for. Doesn't help much for apples and fresh foods.

I'd think any sort of pocket nutrition guide/diet food list from the last 50 years would give you what you want. For free resources you might check out the diabetes association or books like this:

The issue as you present it is the 100 gram portion. I am diabetic and on a high protein/low carb diet. I eat less than 100 grams of carbs per day, usually around 65. My hubby is keto and is under 25. But you don't need to know about that.

Online I use the website My Fitness Pal to look up information and to record my food for the day. It's free and pretty easy and customizable.

This probably isn't much help but I just look them up. My husband and I are doing Keto right now. I should find an easier way to find out. Thanks for starting this.

I was going to offer to send you mine but on checking it is all in pieces, ounces, or cup portions.
I'm wondering if a UK or Canadian published book would have grams?
the Book Depository has free shipping worldwide (based in the UK) you might check there?

I can't read apps on my phone anymore so that wouldn't be a solution for me either.

I had a BD Getting Started Booklet when I was first diagnosed with Diabetes 2 and it listed food in grams. I checked online to see if it was available. Couldn't find it, but did find an app that you can download from BD that says it will help you with many things including grams in food. MissEva, If you go to atkins.com and click on "How It Works", and then select "free tools", you can download a fairly comprehensive pdf carb counter. Remember, "No fruits, no roots, no sugar, no starch" (so no potatoes, no peas, no carrots, no bread, no processed foods, and so on).


For anyone else reading this who is curious, the way that a low carb diet works is by basically turning to your fat cells for energy. If a person is minimizing their carbohydrate intake, the body has to find another source for energy, so it turns to fat cells for that energy. For people who are measuring their success using keto sticks, the keto sticks turn colors based on the amount of carbon fragments in urine. Carbon fragments are given off when fats stores are broken down for energy. But... you can get a false reading if you are dehydrated. Don't forget to drink plenty of water.


Consider South Beach, or Sugar Buster. Sugar Busters and South Beach are very similar to each other. Sugar Buster's glycemic index is measured against sugar; South Beach measures theirs against white flour. The goal in choosing the correct foods here would be to choose foods that have a lower glycemic index number, which would cause your blood sugar to rise and fall more slowly. My mother-in-law had adult-onset diabetes and I bought her a Sugar Busters book. She went on the diet and her doctor was very pleased with the changes in her lab values and her overall health.


You can have legumes on the Sugar Busters plan. The glycemic index is lower if the beans are served al dente'. The longer you cook them, the higher it raises the glycemic index. Certain fruits have a lower glycemic index. If I were to eat a peach, for example, I would choose one that was not as ripe, because it would have a lower sugar content and the index number would be lower. I would stay away from bananas, watermelon, and pineapple while trying to lose weight on this plan, and, with the exception of free foods (foods you can eat as much of as you want without consequence, like Kale or lettuce) I would still pay attention to reasonable portion control.

I did the Atkins diet and lost all my extra weight and have kept it off doing a maintaining diet. I kept my carbs to 25 a day. Cutting all carbs will set you up to failure and make you feel shaky. I found all the carb food info listed in an old Atkins book. I cut out the list from the book and used it for years. I memorized what and how I can eat to maintain so I don't have it anymore. A good idea is to check the library to see if you can find a book with the list you want and then buy a used one from Ebay or Amazon.
