Not my superstore (In Kanata, Ontario)....but our Freshco does but gives your quarter back when you return the cart.

A friend of mine says he usually makes a dollar or so taking carts back that were left in the lot when he goes to Aldi.

in our town, the grocery stores use that method so the carts get returned. There are still carts around, but not as many end up in the ditches and creeks and rivers. When you return the cart you get your money back. Seems like a pretty good method to me. Two stores charge a $1.00 and one is .25. They also have tokens that can be used over and over.

Think what it would save the store, I like it at aldis, I think it would be great.

They've had this in Germany for many years-I think you have to put a Euro coin in. It does protect your car from having run-away carts ramming into it-and you do get the money back when you return it. It's really not such a bad idea. And-they have it at all of the Aldi's in the area.

The town I live in has a law that stores that provide carts have to do this. It is .25 and the quarter comes out when you return the cart. Certainly keeps the parking lots neater and once you are used to it, it doesn't sem a big deal. Plus, stores don't have to replace carts as often.

I saw this at one of the Aldi grocery stores. They didn't have bags either, you had to bring your own. Prices were cheaper, but not by much.

I lived in Europe for about 13 years. Paying to use the cart and getting your coin back was very common. Also they didn't supply bags unless you paid for them, and you had to ask. Everyone used shopping baskets, cloth bags and what is discribed as foldable milk crates. Once you got used to it it was ok.

Aldi's also charges you for bags unless you bring them from home.
I wouldn't mind the quarter a cart if it saved them enough that they could have more than one cashier in the store AND if the cashiers cared a little more for your purchases. It never fails, if I have tomatoes, they throw a canned item on top of them. (I've tried to prevent that by putting the tomatoes last on the belt, but they still seem to find a way to squish them.
