thanks. i looked at my system and admin and clicked on defrag.I found it's set up to do this every Wednesday at 1 a.m.
Why HP assistant wanted to do this during the day is beyond me. at least i know it's already being done and correctly.

I use Microsoft Security Essentials http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/secur...s/default.aspx free download. It keeps my PC in great shape, including doing automatic defrags.

I recommend that you delete anything that is old, or no longer needed. And 'cookies' are BAD! Every website you visit 'plants' a cookie on your hard drive (so they can see what sites you visit, recognize you, etc). So please periodically DELETE YOUR COOKIES!!!

mine takes several hours.....I have a 500 gig hard drive. I have it set to defrag once a week. A deep virus scan weekly also and it does a bi-weekly maintenance check.

OK, does anyone know what a Multimedia Optical Drive is? I have that and an expansion bay which doesn't open. I dont' want to put disks in to see things on my computer. I would like to put a disk in to read a manual. like on the new telephone we got and can't get a dial tone on again.sigh. computer stores don't always do what you want.
anyway, the last time i tried to backup my computer i almost never got my disk out. had to shut down the computer to get it to open.
I hate to drive over to the store again but suppose i must. I need to back up and to be able to read disks.

On your computer, got to Start, then click on All Programs, then click on Accessories, then System Tools then click on Disk Defragmenter and follow the prompts. Easy Peasy. But, could take awhile. Hope this helps.
