I love that vegie table! I plant peppers & tomatoes for veggies and I have a lot of bulbs, irises, perenials, flowering bushes & we plant about 50 annuals each year. Our problems are a very sloped yard & we can experience 40-70mph winds from the south. It really does a number on the flowers.

Jaci, I'm crazy about gardening, have been for years and years. I'm a cottage gardener and there are never enough flowers to suit me ;) This year I'm concentrating on grass and shrubs but I'll plant veggies too. Your raised beds look awesome!

'scuse the goat fencing and the farm equip. heee!

Forgive my ignorance...but...

I want to grow lettuce. How do you harvest it? Do you just strip the leaves?

Will the leaves come back? Or is one head the only yield?

I gardened for many years even won the city award for best yard but am physically unable to do it anymore and have slowly been selling off my plants and reducing the size of the flower beds because the husband has no green thumb

My garden is now under about 4 feet of snow. But here are some pics of part of it from last summer.

I have mostly perennials with a few annuals here and there for colours after the perennials hve finished blooming. I do one very big weeding and soil prep early in the season and then it is just maintenance for the rest of the summer. We had an interlocking brick patio put in a few summers ago - worst things ever. Weeds are constantly growing between the bricks and I hate it. I can't use Round-Up or the like because of Henry. Does anyone know of an organic or pet-friendly weed killer???

We live on a very steep hill and have almost no backyard (10' or less), but we managed to eek out a tiny garden area.

We plant a little corn, some okra, green beans, squash, strawberries, tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers for making pickles. I ordered the seeds a few days ago.

Now to wait semi-patiently for planting time! LOL!

Purplemem, you are in luck! Lettuce is super easy togrow...at least in the North with cool Springs. I start mine early in April, if it ge cold or snowed on a few times it will be okay. Start with a container or area of good soil, sprinle the leaf lettuce seeds on top, and put a tiny bit of soil on top of the seeds. The seeds are so tiny, hard to see. Water and keep moist. The leaf lettuce will grow QUICK! Just harvest buy cutting off some of the leaves of the plant. Yes it will regrow. Ours is nice til it gets SUPER hot, then it will bolt and be bitter.
Aw, Jacquie, your garden is BEAUTIFUL! I would love to have a green house someday. Right now just a fenced in a rea to keep the deer out!

Thank you so much for answering me! I'm going to try it this year.

Does it always need to be moist? or is rain sufficient?

Anytime Hon. At first, KEEP it moist. I use a spray bottle in my containers, because the seeds are SO small. I would try containers at first, no weeds to deal with.
Spinach is another easy one to grow.
