I don't belong to a guild, and I don't list as charitable donations.

Ok, here is my opinion. Making and donating quilts has absolutely nothing to do with the IRS. I make these darling quilts and give them from my heart. But from now on, I will take pictures and record how much the fabric and batting costs and put it down as charity for my income tax. I have no respect for the IRS, due to some behavior on their part, and I plan on helping myself at tax time.

Like your thought process Wanabee!!!
I donate from the heart, I don't quilt enough to donate enough to deduct.

Only from the heart. My Guild does put a monetary value on any that go thru there and uses it to help with the non-profit status. But for the most part, I just hang onto them once they are completed and when something comes up that I wish to donate to, I turn one in. Recently there was a children's organization in the area that showed their office and quilts were hanging everywhere and over the furniture. They let kids choose what they want, even off the wall. I love that idea and they will get my next one.

In order to take as a tax deduction, you need to itemize. Unless you have a large amount of charitable contributions, medical expenses, mortgage interest, or other deductions, you probably won't be filing a Schedule A, itemized deductions.

I can’t even keep track of some of the fabric I’ve bought to make donation quilts with, let alone the receipts. Besides, my quilts are usually scrappy, with some fabric having been storebought, some having been given to me or won, so there’s no way I could prove my costs even If I wanted to.

The only quilts I make now are for Project Linus(quilts for hospitalized or needy children) which I do from my heart. I do not belong to any Guilds, and do not bother with the tax deduction.

I don't do any charity quilting but I do keep track for any and all donations I make. I have no respect for the IRS either and do not approve of a lot of the way the govt spends my tax dollars so I'm not giving them anymore than I have to. We have our own business and our tax return runs to 15 pages so I do itemize my deductions.
