I know what you mean about the prices! Most things are rather ridiculous for the quality you receive. When I did a lot of dressy occasions, I often bought an nice top or sweater and then made a skirt to go with it from lace or nice rayon fabrics. It always looked nice and I got more use out of both pieces afterwards.

Now I do little dressy stuff so I mostly wear one of my vintage kimono or haori's with black pants or skirt. It keeps things easy and since I have several, I figure no one will remember what I wore 6 years ago so I can just repeat what I have.

I like Younkers or J C Pennys. I have good luck at Dress Barn and Christopher and Banks too. I like www.zulily.com. They are reasonable priced too.
