We got my in-laws a gift certificate around the holidays and are still waiting for the results. I think it will be interesting, as we are not looking for any earth-shattering revelations

Fascinating comments, pro and con, from those of you here; I'm glad I started this topic!
Chasing Hawk, I was tickled to see you post as I was wondering if you would and what the response would be....your "wigwam", indeed! Love it!

And thanks for the "Irish disease" connection; I'll send that on to my daughter whose father was of immediate Irish extraction.

This subject is so interesting to me. I don't really think that I'll ever have my DNA done, but tracing my lineage has been a life long effort. I really haven't been very successful.... my dad's family is a complete mystery, I can't find any info beyond my grandparents, and my mom's family has only been a bit easier to trace, but the search has been fun and I'll continue to do the research as long as I'm able.

I have my Family tree back a few generations... when my friend did the DNA thing with Ancestry... where they send you a kit for $99 US and you swab your mouth and send it back.... theirs was so totally alien to anything that they had in their family tree info.....I guess I just am too much of a skeptic.....

My grandfather was Irish. almost all i know about him. Not a nice person so until I was very old, i never admitted that I was part Irish. silly but still.. I will have to read the posts on the Irish disease again.

My DNA story is a little different than most. My mother walked away and left my father with 4 kids aged -1, 3, 5, & 7 and never bothered to stay I touch. As we all became adults at 18, she contacted us to suddenly "be friends". I was the only one who actually maintained the contact. All of my adult life, (I am 59) she always told me that her mother, my Nana was half Cherokee. Nana does have a darker complexion so I believed her. She also told me that her two brothers hid the Native American ancestry and would deny it. One day last year, while talking to a maternal cousin on a social media site, I said something about my mother being 1/4 Native American. He said "we are not Native American". I said " Mom said you would say that". He did not say anything more about it until a few weeks later. His father, my uncle had his DNA done just to prove to me that we are not Native American. We are not, we have 1% of our DNA from Spain! That accounts for Nana's coloring. Sometimes DNA can solve a dispute. We lost my uncle about a month ago, so his gift to me is even more special to me. (I have to take my mothers lies with a grain of salt, she was that type of person.)

My maternal grandfather came over from Switzerland at the turn of the 20th century. That is enough info for me. . My sister had her DNA diagnosed by 23 & me. Pretty general info (guesses?). Glad I saved my $$

I wonder if these DNA banks are just a cover for the govt. to collect DNA from citizens under an innocent guise. Sorry but...ok..not sorry. I am suspicious. Not participating ..
