I have one in my lower back. I've not been told that I need surgery, but wouldn't do it anyway. I just try to live with the pain and never, never lift anything heavier than 5 lbs. I forgot last week and paid for it all week, lol. Good luck with your treatment.

My mother has all those back issues and did the pain management shots in the spine a couple of times. The first one lasted about 5 months, the 2nd about 4 weeks. Accupuncture has given her the most relief. Yes, all of her pain is in her legs, minimal back pain when she does too much. Mother is 86 and this has been a battle for about 10 years. Good luck!

I have a couple lower discs that the DR herniated when he had to move my tailbone so my daughter could be born, 25 years ago. Ached off and on for 15 years, then my dentist - yes, my dentist - told me to take prenatal vitamins and start eating right, gave me some stretchy exercises. Doesn't bother me near as much as it used to, and usually then because I've done something stup... that I shouldn't. He also diagnosed my rosacea. What a guy. Married, but no one's perfect :)

It may not be appropriate for your specific situation but it is worth a shot. I think the thing to remember is that you can't really non-surgically reverse the damage, per se, but it can be managed in such a way that you are not in constant pain and on alot of medication. Good luck to you.

I had the surgery on two herniated discs. It is THE BEST thing I ever had medically! Instant relief from horrible pain... Watch those pain meds--they can be very dangerous. Best of luck to you!

Good luck in what ever you decide to do. I had 3, two in lower back one in neck. Neck one caused shooting pain down arm like the kind you get when you hit your funny bone really hard. Lower back ones caused back pain and shooting pain in legs. I found relief with physical therepy also. What made a huge difference for me was treatment with the Tens unit, which is the electrical impulse stimulus to the problem areas, it tricks the brain into breaking the cycle of pain messages. I swear by the tens unit. I also see a chiropractor on a regular basis (once a month). I have been pain free for almost 7 months. He is bugging me to exercise to increase my core strength which will keep the problem from rearing its ugly head again in the future.

I am not supposed to be able to do any work, get out of bed, or even walk according to the MDs who see my MRI and xrays-----when they ask how I do it, I just say " I do not listen to MDs!"
Bromelain, magnesium, chiropractor, therapy, and acupuncture...an exercise ball is really important to sit on.
I cannot take pain meds. My body does not tolerate them.
