Wish mine was here to see my house. A great woman who died 4 years ago this October. She always had great advice about color and patterns :D

DH's mother is with the angels, and mine is probably giving the devil a run for his money, so no MIL in our world.

My MIL has been gone for a number of years. She always had a spotless house and food to share. Thank goodness, she didn't visit us often. We did visit her, though; we lived only one town apart. My house was never spotless, but it did look "lived in", lol. Whenever my MIL did visit, she never said anything; I think she was glad I was a good wife to her son and a good mother to our four kids.

My in laws came in once a year for 3 weeks to 3 months. That in itself was an issue! She never even once suggested that my home wasn't up to snuff, because I always kept a very tidy home. But I always cleaned up to the minute she walked in the door. FIL died, she now visits for 6 months out of the year but she lives in her own apartment...Good thing!!!!!! (I go over there and clean)

Never had that worry as she only ever came to our place three times in over 40 years. She passed away the week before last at almost 92 years old and was apparently still a miserable old woman.
She never forgave me for marrying her son. Long time to hold a grudge.

I am a MIL and can tell you I worry more about my kids and grandkids than the condition of their house. It is nice if my DIL and DS clean before we arrive but if they don't, it's not a big deal. It does make you feel special if they put forth the effort. Life is too short to worry about dirty dishes or dust bunnies. :)

No, even my house at its messiest would be spotless compared to hers. My mil is a serious hoarder and I think I may have seen her house on "Buried alive"...

No need to worry, my MIL is always the same, never judges, we have the same interests and my husband works with his family just about every day. MIL doesn't drop in very often, I usually do that to her! She only lives about 10 minutes away. I am easy going (wasn't years ago) and now have the attitude "take me as I am". I have a very relaxed lifestyle and my house isn't always "spotless". We have no kids underfoot to clean up after now and don't worry about trivial things anymore. I keep the house clean but its not always tidy and that doesn't worry us, its our life, our home and our friends and family still drop in regardless. Guess I am lucky :)
