We had to iron my dad's boxers and handerchiefs when we were kids. We also used an old roller iron that you sat in a chair and operated. Did sheets, pillowcases.....ironed just about anything cotton. Thank goodness for poly-cotton now :-)
Sounds like an old Ironrite. I sit to do my ironing. A mangle is a "roller iron" . Takes only about 30 minutes a week to do everything. Nothing beats the Ironrite for performance. I bought this one from Craigslist several years ago. Two years ago I found another in a yard sale not far from my home. I bought it immediately for spare parts. Cost only 20 bucks and I've never had to use any of it. The original one I bought just goes and goes. I just love it and I wouldn't trade my 100 perscent cotton sheets and napkins for any poly cotton ever.

I have a really nice Laura Star iron now, one that my hubby brought me from Germany. Oh my word, do I love that iron. Best quilting iron in town. I don't iron anything else with it but my sewing projects.

I line dry sheets and lingerie & items that call for hand washing, but rarely iron. I love the smell of line dried sheets.

You people are so lucky to have a mangle !!! I had my grandmothers but an aunt whined so much because she wanted it that I finally gave it to her. Don't know what happened to it when my aunt passed. Oh well, can't cry over spilled milk. I did pick up an Elna ironer but it is very small, cheap tho, got it at a yard sale.

I would love to hand dry my sheets, but behind my home there are fields of dirt! They plant melons or tomatoes once in a while, but most of the time they just move the dirt around. I do however iron everything. I like the way it feels.

I am an ironer, but don't iron the sheets. They are always line dried but I do iron the pillowslips along with tea / dish towels, tableclothes, pjyamas and all clothes, with the exception to undies.

I have a small TV in my laundry, watching TV or a DVD is a great way to pass the time ironing.

I have always liked ironing.

There is very little that I am willing to iron, and sheets aren't on the short list. My Mom never ironed sheets - with 8 kids and a husband to care for, that was definitely not a priority.

As for drying clothes on the line, the homeowners covenants in our development don't allow it.

I've noticed that quite frequently Craigslist has them for sale. Some are in mint condition and none of them are very expensive. My first one was purchased from Craigslist for $50.00 some years ago and as I said, the second one I saw in a yard sale for $20.00.

My daughter's father-in-law has one in his basement which as been standing there for about thirty five years. There must be thousands of them around the country. They were last made in about the 1960's I would venture to guess.

But there is a NEW mangle on the market. Williams Sonoma sells it through it's catalog department and it costs about 1,900.00. Made in Germany, and I'd be willing to bet it's a first rate product. But my little old Ironrite isn't going to be replaced any time soon.
