Wisteria can be trained to grow as a tree. It is beautiful when it is. It requires quite a bit of maintenance. I live in Ga. and several people have them in their yards. The object is to pick out one strong section and keep it leaf free except for the top few. Do this until it stands as a tree. then keep it cut back to the size you want or else it will start to grow as a vine and take over everything in site.

You can't get rid of wisteria that easy -- it'll be back with a vengence. Maybe not exactly where you want it, but it will be back.

Oh I know it will be back..but it won't have that really tall dead tree to grow on. I'll have to figure out something else or either I'll just have to keep mowing over it in that spot. I do have a Wisteria "tree" (just made to grow on its own by trimming) elsewhere in the yard...so I don't want it everywhere!!

You just might be surprised to find some new sprigs coming up where the old tree was, Wisteria roots go far and deep. I pulled out what I thought was the whole plant by my pool two years ago, and every spring I find new shoots coming up where the old plant was growing on an old arbor.

That was just so pretty Sandpat, it will grow again. I noticed someone said it might grow on a pine tree, that would look really great down by your entrance.

How sad, I love the fragrance of Wisteria. My son had it growing on a trellis in Florida... sold the house and they took it down..... not a real smart thing to do but it is done and over with. Son moved so we don't have to look at that house any more. I agree, get a sprout going... it will come back in a fury.
