It's time to start checking the school supplies that are on sale in the big box stores and stocking up on the things that we find useful.

We have penny sales at the office supply stores for a few weeks. Each Sunday there are items for 1 penny and up. Well worth the trip each week to stock up in the basic supplies Any extras can be donated to the needy

Yep. My husband has already gone on his annual shopping trip. He does back-to-school boxes and notebook pencil cases for the grands and greats. I think he had 12 to do this year for ages from 7 to 16. The kids look forward to seeing what Gramps/G.Pa will have. He also buys me glue sticks and Elmer's glue.

My DD is teaching 4th grade this year so we went and bought supplies to start the year. She has been doing it for her class for 10 years. This way all the kids have what they need on the first day of school and no waiting for the parents to buy them. The students can bring their own items too - but it is easier for all concerned to have it all there. This way she doesn't have to worry about a student's family that can't afford things. There are so many expenses the start of school and this avoids any excuses. So those sales are wonderful. This year to get her class ready was about $500.00. A friend of hers has a Go Fund Me page, but my DD doesn't want to bother with that. She is single and can afford it. But after buying all the items, a friend convinced her to go to the local casino, they play bingo, but that day she tried playing the slots before leaving and hit a $2,400.00 jack pot. Told her was define intervention, paid off her classroom costs and a healthy portion to her church. (IRS will get their share too.)

Quiltingcandy, that is thoughtful on your daughter's part to start the kids off at the beginning of the school year with supplies... and fortuitous that she won at slots. Teachers do not always get the credit they deserve...

Quilters are so generous......maybe think of the children in southern West Virginia who lost everything in this summer's flash flooding.

And if you live in Ohio, August 5,6 and 7 there is no sales tax on school supplies under $20

For those with kids or grands still in school: for the teacher's holiday or end of year gifts - gift cards to Staples/Amazon/Office Max/Walmart/etc. (This way it doesn't hurt the teacher's own pocket when they supply their classroom.) I know not everyone gives gifts, but my local school sends out notices via the PTA/PTO saying if gifts are given "no personal gifts (mugs, scarves, cookies, etc.) please, but gift cards are most appreciated because they benefit all of our children". Just my humble opinion...
