Unfortunately I threw it all in the trash and it was picked up already.

Have you cleaned out the lint trap in the dryer?

Better you found out now. If you had used it in a quilt, that would be really sad.

It could also be that the black dye caused the fabric to deteriorate. Some old dyes were acidic and ate the fabric away over time.

it may not have been that old but stored where it was exposed to the elements mold mildew. Other posibility is flaws from the manufacturer. If you hold fabric up to the light you can see flaws

I made a lovely Crossroads to Jericho quilt for my Mother and all
of the black squares in the quilt shredded after the 2nd washing. I made the quilt in 1993, the black fabric was Kona cotton bought at the local quilt shop. I was just horrified, but alas..the quilt is now unusable. I feel your pain.

I'm so sorry this happened to you. The fabric was probably old or possibly sun damaged. I once had black fabric (that had been washed) become religious (holey) on the very first quilt I sold. I'm not sure what happened, but somehow I must have mixed in some older black fabric, but I was ableto make it right. So sorry. I don't think I've heard anything like this before.
