My hairdresser is the owner of the shop. I think she charges $17.00 for a shampoo and cut. I go about every 4 weeks, she does not shampoo my hair nor does she dry it.....I have one of those "boy cuts" that is at most 2 inch long at my forehead. shampoo before I go and she sprays with water and trims it up by cutting maybe 1/4 to 1/2 inch off. Takes about 20 minutes. I give her a 20.00 bill every time. If she charged more, I would pay it. Once upon a time, I was without a hairdresser for about 6 months, could not find one who cut it like I wanted, who I liked and could relate to, and who was available in the same shop every single time! I love her and have been going to her for about 6 years now and since she is much younger than me, I plan to hang in with her until my very last cut!
Treat your hairdresser well, you will truly appreciate her/him when you do not have one and someone else messes up your hair. And believe me, it can be done!

My mother was a hairdresser. When she worked in someone else's shop, she had to turn over a percentage of each "sale." Like 40 or more %!! So the tips helped lessen the pain. (Yes, the shop owner paid the utilities and rent, so I get why she had to turn over some of her proceeds.) Then she had her own shop and some would tip and many would not, because she was the owner. It all worked out okay, but the tips were the thing that made it all do-able. I think a lot of shops now rent spaces at a set price per month. My husband gets a $12 haircut and gives the hairdresser $20. She is always delighted.
Just an aside: one year I remember my mother saving her tips. After Christmas she went to a nice clothing store and bought a wonderful wool coat and had enough money to order matching wool to make a skirt. Stylin'!

Edited to add: My mother taught our current hairdresser the craft of giving a good haircut!

I have naturally wavy hair and I have a hard time finding a hairdresser who can cut it properly. When I do find one, I don't mind giving a generous tip at all.

I go to Supercuts and all the girls there do a fabulous job. The haircut is $14.95 and I always give a $5 tip. I never get my hair washed or styled, it's a short style so they usually don't even blow dry it but put some gel on it and I'm done. I always wonder what to give my nail techs when I get a manicure. They are all Vietnamese or Cambodian and do a great job. Right now I give them more than 20% tip too. All the girls are friendly to me and I sure appreciate them.

I think the $42.50 was a typo.

This gave me a chuckle.....my dad tipped $1.00 and thought he was a big tipper! He did do better at restaurants though.

But most of them are low skill jobs. A great deal of what you are paid depends on your skill level. My hairdresser is highly skilled and spends about 2 hours with my to do cut and color. More if I have the Brazilian Blowout keratin treatment. I don't mind tipping him well for his service. The guy who asks "Do you want fries with that?" not so much. I'm not seeing a level of skill or service worth tipping for.

Susie, don't you love the Brazilian Blowout? It makes my hair so soft and no more frizz! I'm having mine redone at my August appointment.
