My parents are both in their 80s. My dad no longer drives and my mom only drives around the small town they live in.

I just relocated to Winston-Salem NC last year from NY and I love it. The weather is great and the cost of living is good. I can't imagine living anywhere else now!
And NC surpassed FL and AZ as the number one retirement destination in 2010.

I'm watching this thread closely. We are thinking about where we want to live when my DH retires. He loves to fish and garden. I love to quilt and belong to several quilt guilds, attend quilt shows and retreats. We don't like to be smothered by heat in the summer nor endure gloomy, grey skies or lots of snow. Where is that ideal place?

We are n the suburbs of Raleigh NC, and it is a great location 2 hours to the beach and about 3 hours to the mountains. Mild winters and we have a huge garden every year. The summers can get hot and humid but after the first year you learn to adjust just do what you need to do outside early in the day. Good Luck
