Were you a smoker

Haven't we all got a lot to be thankful and proud of. It took me ages but I feel I am there. I stopped on the 15th December 2009. I have had a couple of puffs in that time but hated the taste.
So we should all give ourselves a good pat on the back for succeeding.

I quit in 1988, cold turkey. Never picked one up again. I think (and I'm sorry if this offends anyone) that it is absolutely disgusting and I detest the smell. I can't believe I ever smoked, and am SOOOOOO glad I don't smoke anymore. DH never did smoke, I could have never dated a smoker once I quit, much less marry one.
Happy to be in a smoke free home!!!!!!

I quit about seven years ago, spreading time on the patch over a longer time. My roommate smokes nonstop,so when he is home, I try to stay out of the house. Even after all this time, I can feel that addiction calling to me.
Good luck with quitting!

I smoked for a few years while in college, although it took several days to go through a pack. DH had smoked since HS. We both quit shortly after we got married and I'm so glad I did. That was 40+ years ago. I have COPD now, not from smoking, but probably from the chemicals I've worked around for 30 yrs. I'm sure I would have developed it much sooner had I kept smoking....or lung cancer, or throat cancer, or stroke, or heart attack....... COPD is not curable and I will eventually be on oxygen if something else doesn't get me first. Mine is mild right now and I hope it stays that way for a long while!

I smoked 1-1.5 packs a day for about 34 years. Right after my grandson was born 8 years ago, I was on vacation at my daughter's house and ran out of cigarettes. I wanted to see my grandson grow up, so instead of going to the store for more, I just quit, and it was the best thing I ever did. Except for gaining 30 pounds!!! So now I'm working on heatlhy eating - I have 3 grandchildren now to consider. Amazing how they can be the hammers that hit you over the head and wake you up to what you are doing to yourself. To all here who have quit - congratulations!!!!!!

I smoked off and on for about 20 yrs. I never smoked while pregnant.
I finally quit on my Mom's 76th birthday, that was 6 years ago. My husband quit a few days after that. We used the "patch", it works they want you on it for 2 months. We stopped after 2 weeks. The secret is you want to stop, not someone such as your doctor or family forcing you.
With the money we saved we paid off one truck, and now are paying off the second one. Money left over even helps with the extra insurance for 3 trucks with full coverage and a Harley with full coverage.
And you smell better too.

I was never a heavy smoker, more of a social smoker. I quit when I had a fibromyalgia flare up and the cigarettes made me sick. That was over 30 years ago. I have had no desire for a cigarette since.

I have been smoke free for 18 months after smoking for 42 years. My niece was a chain smoker and called me and said she had quit smoking and was close to 6 months smoke free!!! I asked her how she did it and she said her Doctor perscribed Chantix for her. I went to my Doctor the next day and he perscribed Chantix for me. I was a little sceptical as I had tried to quit several times before and failed. I was shocked that by the 2nd day I took Chantix, I actually "forgot" to have a cigarette until 2 in the afternoon. I was on a 16 week program and have not had a cigarette since the 6th week so I had no reason to take any more. Since then, I have gotten my sister, another niece and 2 people at WM to quit using Chantix.

Began smoking in high school, not a big smoker but smoked nontheless. DH also started smoking in high school and we smoked all the time. His was a 2 pack a day habit and mine was finishing off the few ciggies left in his packs. He finally quit by going through a behavior modification program at local hospital and never smoked again. After he quit I didn't have those packs of a few ciggies left to smoke. By the time I got to the end of the full packs I bought they were stale and didn't taste good so I quit.
It's been over 20 years since we both quit and DH no longer has a grey look to him. May in Jersey
PS: Noted funny thing when I previewed message before posting it, each time I thought I was typing quit I typed quilt. LOL, been posting on this board too long today.

Congratulations on being a non smoker. I STARTED when I was 40; worked at a grocery store in the bad section of town where everyone had hickeys and tatoos. It was very stressful. Smoked for 20 years, retired, and a "force" came over me that took away my cravings.
