The first 45's I remember buying (well, my mother actually bought them!) were "Puff the Magic Dragon" by Peter Paul & Mary and "The Birds and the Bees" by Jewel Akens. They weren't for me, but for my neighbor and best friend for his birthday. I think it was his 5th! The first I remember for myself was "Downtown" by Petula Clark. All those songs still make me smile for the memories they bring to mind.

My first 45 rpm was "I'm Sorry" by Brenda Lee.

I bought Elvis singing "Don't Be Cruel" that my mother and I heard on a radio station back in the 1950's. Ohmygod, am I that old? I was twelve when I first heard that man's voice and was absolutely stunned. Then I noticed my mother was just standing there too, as stunned as I. She loved Elvis until her death in 1992. I put one of the U.S. Postal Service cards that showed the Elvis Memorial stamp that mom and I had voted for in her coffin so she wouldn't be lonely.
