I started sewing around 10 on my mom's old singer treadle. I sew all kinds of things...kids clothes, curtains, slip covers and have been quilting for for over 15 years.I do alterations in my home.

I started sewing early and completed 10 years of 4-H sewing. My mother was a home economics teacher, so I had lots of expert help. My college included both reg. sewing and tailoring. I have also made jeans to underwear. My favorite non-quilt items to still sew are smocked dresses. Over the years I've made matching smocked dresses for my niece and her dolls. I now have a 2 yr old granddaughter so am back at smocking. YEAH! The quilting bug started in the mid-70's when I pieced one or two tops a year and my mom's quilting group handquilted them for me. I was working full time and had kids then. Now I sew about every day and complete lots and lots of projects.
It's been fun to read these posts

My wife and I, empty-nesters for several years, have a fabric/sewing shop in rural farm country. She’s been sewing, mending, and altering clothing for herself and the family since she was a teenager, and now she does minor alterations and mending for the public during the day, and quilting/crafting for herself evenings and weekends.

My main interest is vintage sewing machines themselves, so nearly all of the actual sewing that I do is mending, and that’s mostly denim work clothing. I also put new zippers in coveralls and coats and sew patches onto uniforms. I get to mend a handbag, camera case, or shoe once in a while. The “alterations” that I do are pretty much limited to hemming jeans. I’ve only been at it for about 6 years, but enjoy helping my wife with the sewing in our little shop.

I sew kids' clothes, especially for my great niece. I used to sew most of my own clothes, but haven't done that for years. I also make purses and all sorts of crafts.

My Mom worked in the garmet district and tried to show how me to sew when I was much younger. I'm sorry now that I did'nt learn. I would like to make some of my own clothes.

I'm with you. Ihate doing alterations. Ilove making things for family.Ihave been making pillowcases, casserole carriers and pot holders. My prayer shawl ministry is getting ready to make fleece boas for the upward girls at church. We have to make 60. I have been wanting to try making the sock monkeys, but i'm not much on making stuffed animals.

To be truthful, I think I do more sewing than quilting.

I do other types of sewing too. I like to do home dec sewing, and used to sew for my kids. I would like to get back to sewing for myself as well.

I do all kinds of sewing and needlework - ALL KINDS - if I can stick a needle in it, I'm doing it.
