    I've wondered about that, too.

Are there any vets that could speak/write directly about this?

I did a purple and yellow quilt for my 3 tour vet. His favorite color is purple. I called is Yellow Ribbons and Purple Hearts. He adores it and it was the catalyst of a wonderful 3 year friendship. He was not physically wounded, but he came back very emotionally beat up.

I mailed 15 quilts to Afghanistan this year and only about 1 in 3 were red, white, and blue. They were all passed out to soliders in my sons company; he had a waiting list for them.

What is he favoriate hobby. Boating, fishing, cars? I would make it something that would not remind him of what he has been through, but of what brings a smile to his face.

I can't help but wonder if there are some returning vets who would prefer NOT to be reminded of their time over there, and would appreciate something entirely different.

What have you made for a returning vet that is of a non-patriotic theme? And can anyone recommend a quilt-donation-coordinating organization that doesn't require a particular theme?

I work waith a group making Quilts of Valor. Many are red, white and blue but many are not. I have quilted many quilts in fall colors--very masculine and nice for guys who love the outdooors. I always quilt oak leaves on those, which are symbolic of patriotism, strength and renewed life.

I've also quilted some in girly fabrics. Remember that 10% of the wounded soldiers are female.

I didn't sew these; I just quilted them. Here are pix of 2 of the many QOV that I've quilted. I love finishing them.

I know the people who get them need a lot of comfort and this is one small way I can show my thanks for their service and sacrifice.

I volunteer at the VA hospital and have seen quilts with ever theme and color. There is one female on the ward and she has a beautiul bright Hawiian print, so please remember our female service members when donating a quilt.

I was thinking maybe make what ever color or pattern and maybe put a label that just says Thank you . so many have given so much and sometime a simple thing like thank you could mean so much

I have made several quilts for our local VA hospital and called them before I started and they told me that most anything would work, but not to use flowery fabric .
