What I do is appliquilt. First I draw my pattern on freezer paper, (backward.) Then I iron it onto my fabric. I cut the fabric out 1/4" bigger than the freezer paper. Next I fold this edge over the paper design & starch it to death or use glue stick. After taking the freezer paper off I reiron the edges over. Next I glue the design onto the background fabric. This is where I divert from normal: I sandwich the quilt & as I machine sew the applique down I'm quilting the all of the way through!

dublb, what is the largest quilt you have done by this method? If I understand you correctly, if you are making a queen size quilt, you start with a queen size backing and a queen size whole cloth for the top, put the batting in between and then glue the appliques on top, then machine stitch the applique down which is the quilting for the quilt. Is this correct? What type of basting do you use? What type of machine stitch do you use for stitching down the applique?

Only putting together and machine stitching one time.

OK; The picts. will take a little bit to locate & post. But I'll find some. I haven't made anything bigger than a lap quilt but it could be done with a larger one. I make the quilt top with the applique glued on & set with an iron. (Elmer's washable glue sticks or equal off brand.) Then I sandwich it.
Now to locate those picts.

This is the quilt that I'm working on now. It's for my DGS. I hope you can see the "quilting" on the back. I also did SID & am now attempting to FMQ the Solar System blocks. I'm not sure you can see but I have some Press & Seal with the swirls drawn on 4 of these blocks.
I'm still looking for some older quilt picts.

I love to applique. I started with machine applique at first. But about 2 years ago I started to hand applique. I LOVE IT! I am working on Aunt Millie's Garden now and am getting ready to start on "Friends of Baltimore" in January. I would love to be part of this group.

This I did for my DMIL. She has Alzheimer's so I wanted her to see her name when it was on her. Now she can't read anymore but liked it when she could. I did this raw edge 'cause it is fleece. I used blanket stitch for this one.

Ok the last one that I can find picts. of. This quilt was donated to the Midland High Swim team & was raffled off. These picts were altered with paw prints so that I could advertise 'em. I don't have any picts of the back. I used the blanket stitch with this one also, then I hand quilted the rest of it.
