I've had great luck with color catchers. but I will rinse a real bleeder in the sink a few times to eliminate some of the dye before it even hits the washer. And I may use two sheets.

Retayne & Synthrapol (sp) are available by mail from Dharma Trading Company. www.dharmatrading.com I think some quilts shops carry the products, but I rarely see it. http://www.dharmatrading.com/html/eng/1981-AA.shtml

NAAY, but this is the one place you can always get the products from.

I've used them and put more than one in depending on the amount of fabric or size of quilt I'm washing. If the color catcher is dark with color, I was again with more color catchers. So far that's worked and I haven't ruined anything yet.

I'm doing a BOTM thing and after sewing the first block, thought, "I bet she didn't pre-wash the fabric." I learned the hard way to do that. I guess I'll just dry clean the thing if necessary?

Maybe what they are saying is that we should use a white (cotton)cloth AND the Shout or Carbona.. Seems like that would doubly insure against color bleed. (just a thought) :-)

I've never had a problem with the Shout color catcher, but if I'm washing fabric that has been dyed, or reds in particular, I wash them alone but I still use the color catcher, often I'll throw in 2 for good measure. And sometimes I'll throw in the color catcher (which catches any bleeding) and white vinegar (which will permanently set the color).

Confused about Retayne/Synthrapol. I have used Retayne after my quilt was together, and have not seen any dye running. I have never used Synthrapol before. I have bought a lot of batiks for a quilt and have seen from this board that the batiks run. Should I use the Synthrapol before I cut the fabric or after I make the quilt? Does it matter? (I had used the Retayne before on some black sweaters and tshirts that were new and the dye ran, and the water was black, but then I put the Retayne in the water and the dye disappeared! The water was clear again! Shirts are still black!)

I sort laundry according to lights and darks. I do not put a brand new red anything with a white the first time. Even if I wash the new red witha reds I still use the color catchers.
I have washed my quilts after they are quilted, (I don't pre-wash) using the color catchers, and I have not had pinks in my quilts instead of lights.
I think I will still use them.
