Default GFG Baby Quilt - Need Advice

My DN is expecting the first baby girl in our family since our DG was born 16 years ago (there have been 9 boys, GS's and GN's, in the meantime). I decided to make this quilt, all hand pieced, and was going to hand quilt it. Well, instead of having her shower mid September, it is being held 2 weeks from Saturday! There is no way I can get this hand quilted by then, so need suggestions and advice on machine quilting it. I'd like to quilt it in the traditional echo inside each hexagon, but am concerned about all the stops and starts.

I would purchase a small stuffed animal and attach a cute card with an IOU for the quilt. Who can be unhappy with an IOU for a hand pieced/hand quilted quilt?

You could wrap the top and explain that it will be completed. I've done that before. Or just machine quilt-- get it done and out the door! I'm the wrong one to ask about how to quilt it, though. I'm always stumped.

also, you could do a stitch in the ditch like this. or just do the verticals or the horizontals, depending on the needs of your batting for distance.

I was in exactly the same situation in May. I could not finish the baby quilt I wanted to give my daughter in time for her baby shower so I decided to give another gift with a hint/clue that there was still something very special to come. I sincerely feel that if you have put so much love and effort into hand piecing, then you should take the time to finish it the way you really want to. You will be much happier with the end result!

Thanks QuiltnNan for the link and for the idea of just doing the horizontals and verticals. Will have to mull this over.

What about a French knot in the center of each hexagon?

Can you whip out a mini quilt in the same fabrics that could be given with a doll? Add a note that the real one will come when the real baby comes?
