Yesterday I finished the main part of DGD's quilt. Two borders to cut and one to piece. This is second time I made this quilt. DGD loved mine from the time I started it. She was known as the "tie dye kid". Her mother told me how much she wanted mine - I like it too!

Saturday was not kind to me. I originally planned on quilting the day away but severe storms blew through Friday night and a lightning strike popped all of my breakers and the main switch outside and I was without power until Sunday afternoon. Happy to report the power is back on, but my nerves are still a little on edge, it sounded like the house was going to explode when it hit.

We were all set for the heavy storms here and we didn't get it. We had lots of rain and some icing but not what was predicted for our area. Others around us were not as lucky. We didn't even lose power which is unusual when we have ice storms and heavy rains. I can relate to how scary it must have been when the breakers all blew! It would shake up the best of us.
One of the things that always amazed my husband was my ability to read or to sew even without power. My treadle is kept in fine working order and there are always oil lamp. Though admittedly I do not sew when it gets dark as I don't want an oil lamp that close to my sewing. But reading is always an option with an oil lamp. .

We ended up with more than what was predicted, a lot more. So much flooding around me in just a brief time and we did get some ice/sleet Saturday morning but not enough to really do much.

I'm always so jealous of those that have treadle machines, it's always been a dream of mine to get one. I have a friend that has one but it will need such a huge amount of TLC if I ever got my hands on it because she stores it on her back deck, so I'm sure there is a lot of rust and the wood is in bad, bad shape. Maybe someday I'll find one, I hope anyway :-)

Maybe pick hubby's brain about lighting around the treadle for when the power goes out? I know it doesn't happen often, but this past weekend got my other half to thinking and if we can find oil lamps, he's going to get a couple to hang from the wall. I've got a tealight chandelier that hangs from the ceiling right behind me, I didn't light it up this past weekend because we were running around making sure the house was okay but when I do light it, I've got enough that I could have quilted, it lights up the whole room.

I have never tried to use my treadle without power for lights to see by, but I do collect oil lamps, and have one of those LED emergency lights plugged into outlets. One thing we've always done at my house when the power goes out is to set all of our candles or lamps on a mirror, to reflect the light as much as we can. Mom even has a couple of older home interior wall sconces with a candle holder in front a mirror. You'd be surprised at how much of a difference that can make!

I once found a boot box full of candles at a yard sale for $4, years and years ago. They're mostly tapers, and I still haven't made a dent in that box!

Last summer, there were planned power outages d/t forest fire danger. We got a generator for refrigerator, freezer and water.

I expect planned power outages to continue every year to avoid sparking forest fires.

I think your 2nd mom would be thrilled that you are thinking of her and using her scraps. And wonderful that sons didn't just see those as trash but treasure. Enjoy the time with your memories and know you will meet again.

Well, I'm making myself find my quilting mojo again. Starting working on a jelly roll and cutting strips for a braid quilt. All was going o.k. until the end of the cutting when I accidently cut 3 strips to 6" instead of the required 7"....so much for a good day! Off to Joann's today to try to match the red color up in one of their prints so I can sew this weekend when it will get really nasty here in Iowa!!.

We've had snow on the ground in Seattle since Sunday, usually we only have a day or so. I've been getting to know my new little dogs and cleaning up a bit, which requires fabric moving, re-ironing, etc. I did make it to the store yesterday (had to get lotto tickets!), we went to Costco Monday so had plenty of supplies at home, but yesterday was a day of cooking.

I had planned to do them a couple days ago but we had to take Buddy (the first dog) to the vet, so I made two batches of vegan tamales yesterday. A new member posted a recipe that uses broth and vegetable oil, so easily adapted to vegan. I made half with a spicy mushroom/onion/red pepper flakes/fresh cilantro filling, and the other half I just mixed in a can of niblets into the masa, sort of like cornbread. Son & DDiL & Grandbundle are going to a mountain cabin with friends this weekend, so I froze half the batch(es) for them, and hubby is taking the rest to work for the plant-based people there.

Also made a pot roast for the keto/carnivore that is my hubby! And of course then there were large pots and pans to wash and clean.

So today, I sew! And tomorrow I find out if we have the layout for the Bonnie Hunter quilt, I'm guessing one more work clue and reveal next week but that's just my guess.
