Default Has anyone ever changed a Q-Snap Floor Frame to be more like the Ulmer frame?

Strange question from me, which seems to be my usual.

Right now I have the Q-Snap Floor Frame, which you can see here:

http://yarntree.com/cross-stitch/ind...ducts_id=13059

It's a pretty big frame, and I have limited space. And I also am very short, so reaching around that big frame is a bit challenging.

I recently discovered the Ulmer frame, which you can see here:

http://www.ulmerquilter.com/

I like the fact that the Ulmer is so much narrower than the Q-Snap. Working on a smaller area, I think, would be easier for my short arms.

I'm wondering if there's any way to change the Q-Snap to the narrower version, maybe by cutting the PVC pipe? If anyone has tried that, can you tell me how it worked?

I know the Q-Snap will never have the "foldability" of the Ulmer frame. Maybe I should just go ahead and sell the Q-Snap and buy the Ulmer.

I would cut the QSnap to the size I wanted. If it works and suits you then you won. If it doesn't work it will be easy to buy the replacement pipe or go ahead and buy the Ulmer frame. At least you will know.

this was my thought about it, too. you have to be comfortable to enjoy the process of quilting

I think before I spent $214 on the Ulmer frame, I would either cut down the PVC pipes on the QSnap that I owned or spend a few bucks and have some PVC cut. I think you would also have to cut the pieces that hold the quilt in the frame. . . I can't remember how big the Snappers are. Thanks for sharing this as I have a QSnap frame and don't use it because it is too big. I would even consider cutting the height down on it too. I did buy the feet extensions for the back legs so the frame is higher in the back than in the front. Maybe with some adaptations, I will finally use it. If I screw it up, I'm only out $35 bucks that I paid for it off Craigslist!

I also purchased the QSnap and do not use it because I had to constantly adjust the quilt on the frame in order to reach an area being quilted. My quilting room is very small so I set the frame up in my livingroom to enable me to watch TV. When I went to put it into the sewing room I couldn't get it thru the doorway. My question is who is going to be brave enough to try to alter their frame first LOL!

I would not cut the existing PVC pipes...they are cheap enough to buy......so buy two others or have two others cut down. This way if it does not work, you can still sell the original package in tact! I have the Q snap and added lifters. If you have short arms and cannot reach, just move your chair to a different position so you can reach an area. That's the convenience of this set up....

Oh, I forgot, you would have to cut down the floor support PVC pipes too, but still would be worth the try

Thanks everyone.... great ideas here, as always. I may go and check out the PVC pipe at Home Depot and see what I can figure out. I think Geri B is correct, it's probably better not to cut the original set up in case I decide to sell it. And I love coloradosky's comment about it not fitting through the door - I have the same problem!

My first thought was that you wouldn't be able to make the snappers fit the shorter pipe. However, upon reflection, maybe you could cut them in the middle instead of the ends and it would be workable.

You can buy the snappers at greenhouse supply, they also have shorter ones.
