Just did one for a friend who did NOT want pink even though it was for a girl. So I got some bright lime green fabric with the words "Girl Bugs" and lady bugs, butterflies, dragonflies, in yellow, white and just a little bit of hot pink, and used darker bright lime green sashing with the bright yellow squares on half and yellow sashing with the green squares on the alternating ones facing the opposite way. If I did another one I would do hot pink piping around the 6" center square before adding the sashing. But it came out really cute anyway. I backed with a lime green flannel & tied it with bright yellow 1/8" satin ribbon tied in tiny bows.
Oh, I'm a Grammy!
Have some cute animal fabric with a more pastel green background that could be either boy or girl.

Have you checked with the moms as to what they want? Some want brights, some have a theme, some want a particular color scheme, and some are just grateful for whatever you do!

yep made lots of them lately and since I just found out a couple weeks ago that my sister is pregnant will be making several more.

Personally I like solid colors that make up the quilt, brown/black, pink/blue, and cream. And I also like vintage nursery rhymes. I have recenly made several that are blue/pink and white. I also love a very clean look.

I've done jungle themes, frogs and tropical fish for boys and cute bugs, tropical fish and flowers for girls.
I like the bright and cheery colors personally.

Old grandma here, and todays colors for babies just turn me off. I still prefer the softer colors for a new baby, I just think it suits them. I am ready to start making baby quilts to put back for great-grandbabies, whenever the time comes. For the two GD, I will make their quilts from clothing I"ve made for them in the past. For the three boys, I will probably use soft colors too. It seems funny thinking about making quilts to "put back", but I'm 71, and only two grandchildren are of the age to become parents, and there is a good chance I won't be around to see Greats from the younger ones, so this is my way of showing love for them when I'm not here. IS that being silly?

I have made 16 baby quilts in the last 5 years! For the last few grandbabies' quilts, I asked the moms if they wanted pastels or brights and they always want brights. I made one in primary colors, one in red, blue and tan cowboy fabrics, one in bright pink, purple and lime green and the last one in purple, hot pink, teal, bright blue, lime green and bright dark yellow. The girl quilt in pink, lime green and purple was princess fabric that sparkled. My DIL picked it out. About 4 years ago I made pastel quilts for twin girls because they decorated the room in pastels.

I'm a grandma and I have made 2 disappearing 9 patch baby quilts with batiks and solids that go with them. They are stunning and really different. Both recipients of the quilts were thrilled with the way they were so unlike anything their friends babies had. (Of course you have to
know the person you are making it for -- there are so many all coordinated nurseries going on now -- pretty boring).

I made over a dozen baby quilts in the last two years and they varied by the parent and the gender of the child. Boys: Neon colored Dinosaur Babies on black, Noah's Ark in light pastels, Glittery Butterflies on bright yellow with lime green, blue and orange Jungle Babies with blue, orange and green, Critter Jamboree with bright red, blue, green and cream, Cow jumped over the Moon on cream, Chocolate and pastel blue, and a Sunstreaked Shadows of green, blue, gold and brick red. Girls: Light pastel with Teddy bears, Hot pink friendship stars surrounded with multicolored pastel dots on white, Citris colored multiprint, Chocolate and pink, White bubbles on brighter pastels, and a Bright Batik.

I agree that "anything goes" seems to be the current trend but at least they still love our quilts!

I have made several lately. A crumb block D9P that had all kinds of colors, a pinwheel with bright prints/neutrals, a yellow and white 9 patch, and a strip quilt with cream and I-spy fabrics. I think anything goes these days.
