how many yds of a fabric do you buy, impulse buy?

Just a heads-up. Walmart sells a white 90" wide fabric called curtain lining. It is 100% cotton, washes, dries and makes up beautifully. I used it to line my daughter's wedding gown the first time I saw it. I've used it to make practice patterns and it is perfect for backing. I have even made a quilt for my new granddaughter (not born yet) where I used it front and back but hand quilted a precious moments picture, and pretty boarders, into it. Now get this, it is less than $2.00 per yard. At our store, it is $1.29 per yard.

usually 1 1/2 yds... I have to go back and get more yellow and black for the quilt I am working on. Since I work without a pattern, I try to buy more than I need but, I guess I am not very good at calculating amounts. Off I go today to get more fabric.

In the days when I use to buy fabric I would buy 3-4 yards of any given piece that I fell in love with. Now however my stash over flows and there is not a space to be had for another piece of fabric. I admit to being a fabricaholic and need to stay away from the LQS or JAF. Fortunately I have most of my fabrics very organized and when I want something I can 'pull' it out. Getting back in is a problem but I can get it out. Only on a very rare occasion will I buy fabrics now. I work out of my stash, as it is a given my stash will out live me even if I turn out a quilt a day for the next 30+ years. So even in my stash the average piece of fabric is about 3 yards and only less if I have worked off that piece over time.

I buy 3 yards if I am not sure what I pattern I am going to use for it...and if it is close to the end of the bolt I buy it all..but 3 yards is usually safe for me...if I think its going to make a great bag (purse) than I buy a yard...most take a yard or less of focus fabric ..at least most that I do...blessings
