Amen sister. It ticks me off that they also expect me to do it for free or to work for around $1.00 per hour because I don't work outside of the home so there for I should be thanking them for giving me something to do because my life must be so empty and unfulfilled.

2. One af my MANY dear nieces calls up: Do I have a quilt finished I could let her have for a prayer quilt for her church? So finished a quilt top for her. What do I want for it? I bit my lip and said $30.00 (about pays for the thread) because it was a church after all.
3. Another dear niece says can I make my 3 year old great nniece a bag from "horsie" fabric? I will get the fabric for you. Oh oh n o I will get the fabric. Four hours of sewing later I have a bag to give her. I did want to ex periment with my own pattern and after all she is an adorable 3 year old.
4. Another niece is going to be in a wedding and needs her dress taken in "just a bit". In the end I will give in because she can't afford alterations.

And I work full time. and my house looks like c**p.

Conclusions I have reached:
1. I have way too much family.
2. I am indeed the favoite aunt.
2. I need to learn the word "no". (I overvolunteer also!)

Is there a program for sewers to learn to say no? (Just kidding - I know I do it to myself.)
Offer a time exchange--Say "It will take me three hours to do that, so will you come over and clean my house for three hours while I work on your project?" I used to do that with my kids when they wanted me to drive them somewhere, a "time trade". If they want it badly enough, they will agree.

I just keep getting amazed when I read alll these postii is si much easier to say no to people who aren't family or friends! It becomes difficult and a lot of time we end eating the cost because we can afford too and you know they can't ! On the flip side of all this, there are the people who do appreciate what we do!

I tell folks ..my time is $$$$
and that is plus the price of fabric and any other materials.
now if I make something and they like it and want it I price it..............not so many want to pay the price.

Those who do not quilt or sew to not know the time and dedication it takes to make a work of art. When someone asks me to make something for them "quicK", I always tell them I am to busy.

I have a friend who "drops in" with slacks that need shortening, jeans that need patching, blouses missing buttons, etc. She asked me once if I could shorten the jeans she wanted to wear when she & her hubby ride our horses with my hubby, & I made the mistake of saying "Yes". I've created my own monster - so far she hasn't asked me to make a quilt - would have to figure the cost & come up with a price if she did that.
In her defense, she does fix wonderful the Korean food she grew up with, and is generous with it, so I hesitate to gripe. :)

I think that people equate a sewing project as if they wanted you to make a batch of cookies. They think it take an hour and cost $5.00. So they have no problem asking for it. GRRRRR I get so angry at them thinking that my time is worthless!!! I was a professional seamstress for decades and got paid to sew. Now that I am no longer doing that, they think I will just do it for free. I SAY NO!!!

I agree, like we should be starting Christmas orders in June and graduation and weddings in December.

I had a nurse ask me if I made quilted jackets (she was admiring the one I had on). I said NO. She said Why? I said because you would not want to pay for it. She said How Much? I said $350. She nearly swallowed her teeth and didn't stay around for me to explain that it takes about 40 hard hours to make a jacket like I was wearing, plus the cost of fabrics and threads!
