I make string quilts out of my scraps a lot. I use old telephone book paper for the base. I always put a 1 to 1/2" white strip in the middle and use my scraps out from there. Using the white (or any color) strip in the center makes a design-within-a-design. I will attach a string quilt that I did recently. They are easy to do. I'm always ready to be finished, though. It's a great way to use up every bit of your scraps.

I meant to add this to the post above. I bought a rolling of calculator/adding machine paper and sewed my little pieces for the strip border out of that. That way they came out perfectly even, sewed them and trimmed them up square with the paper. I have enough left over for several more quilts.

Those are both really pretty zozee and plays10s. I really like the secondary designs, and the white makes all those scrappy colors sing.
And I like that version too, Maureen. The stars really stand out in that one.
Here is another version that I started a while ago...it is QAYG, so no foundation:

Ditter43 from here on QB did a string QAYG tutorial here too:

I actually enjoy tearing paper off. It gives me something mindless yet productive to do while watching baseball games! Or pretty much anything else.

Wonderful photos, thank you!
I made 2 today. I remembered I had paper that my son got me from a class he was taking quite awhile ago. It's really thin. They came out great and the paper tore easily.
Thanks, all!

Don’t use paper, it’s yucky. Go to Joanns and buy a very lightweight interfacing and sew on it. No tearing and it’s just fantastic. I kind of like the strings where they have a particular color starting and then scraps all around it. I’ve seen black in the middle and they end up very striking.

I make them all the time. I use the thinnest paper I can find to sew on. Yes, you have to tear it off, BUT when you are sewing on a fabric type foundation it add's extra weight and bulk to the block. Sometimes I just sew small pieces together and then cut later, in whatever direction I want. These blocks measure 3.5" unfinished. I'm using up some 1" or sew strings for these little blocks, using no foundation at all. Where they end up is anyone's guess at this point. BUT I also do strings in color families. I have 4.5" green strings, 6.5" blue strings. I grab the "string bin" that is the fullest and sew on those as leader/enders. One can put solids around any string block, HST, Flying Geese to make stars etc.
