We just last year finished my sewing room upstairs and choose the laminate for the floor. Got it from Costco and installed {hubby and me} ourselves, the boards interlocked together. It looks so great and am so glad I choose it over the vinyl we were considering. But I did get one of those vinyl mats that they use for offices and put it under my sewing chair with the wheels on it to protect the floor.

I have heard a lot of good things about cork. It is supposed to be good on the feet as well.

I agree with you, we had the laminate put in our living room and we love it. The next year we had all our carpet taken out and put laminate in all our bedrooms and hallway. It is wonderful.

In our old house, I didn't have room for a plastic mat under my chair. Not wanting to scratch the laminate, I purchased replacement wheels for the swival secretary type chair that had more of a rubber feel than the all plastic wheels. I think I got them at Office Max or some such office store that sells office furniture. They didn't leave marks or scratch the floor.

I have laminate now. I had vinyl, the nice cushion type, and if anything sits in one position very long, it dents. Also certain items with "rubber feet" leaves marks, which so far I have not been able to remove. My laminate is what is called a "floating floor" and it has some cushioning to it. I love it and would do it again. I still have 3 rooms to remove the carpet and put laminate in. So easy to take care of. The only place I use vinyl now is in the bathrooms. Hope this helps.

I have a good quality laminate in my quilt room for 7 years and have had no problems. Easy clean up and it still looks great.

I have had both. I would opt for vinyl. Either one can be damaged by shoving stuff around. You have to be more careful with liquids with laminate. Get what you like or you won't be happy.

The only difference, in my opinion, has to do with whether water is a threat. Laminate can't take water; it will warp. I have it in my living room/dining room combo and hall and I love it and love the way it looks. (warning though: if you do choose laminate, buy the wide blanks that look beveled and are good quality; we put a cheaper quality in two bedrooms and it's already separating). The only thing I worry about with laminate is if we should get a water leak (roof or hot water heater or large spill).

I love my laminate. And for as many times as I've dropped my scissors, point down, rulers, and stuff, my laminate flooring isn't marker. If it's installed properly laminate IMHO, would be better. I know if I had vinyl I would have had cuts in it. And heavy heavy heavy furniture can slid easily on it with out scratching. But in the long run, it's what ever you like best.
