Some of my students did this sort of thing as a project a couple of years ago, but instead of making quilts, they got on local radio and asked for unwanted baby duvets (comforters?). These are warm and light and wash easily - you can also wash the cover and still use the quilt.

I do this for the home where a dear frind lives. I find that disappearing 9 patch, jelly roll strip(the 1600),scrappy irish chains and just plain ole "put the squares together" quilts work well. I machine quilt or tie quilt. Panel are great especially for holiday season. There are sooo many easy ones. Good luck and have fun

I want to thank each and everyone of you that has responded to my thread. I'm overwhelmed to say the least. All of you have touched my heart more than you will ever know, and in turn I'm sure you are going to bring many smiles to some nice people that will enjoy and benefit from your contributions. I will make sure my niece and her coworkers get names on the quilts so hopefully they won't get legs and walk away. You may want to check with the nursing home to see if the residents can have them. Where I live the residents cannot have home made quilts because of fire restrictions. My step mom was in s nursing home and that is what we were told. The thought is very kind and I hope they can.

If you plan to quilt don't use batting and backing. You need to use fleece. Its softer and will be more gentler on their skin. I know because I make lap quilts for hospice i volunteer at and also universary hospital for dying patients. Fleece makes them softer but still warm. you're doing a wonerful thing be proud

The quilts I make are 45x60. if you make them 70" there is danger of the quilts getting stuck in the wheels of wheel chairs but are long enough to cover ythe patient in bed

I can't donate any quilts have too many to complete myself BUT I will be more than happy to share some fabric. also put a wanted in your local freecycle for cotton and fleece fabric. be sure to state why, you might just be surprised as to what might come your way.

I also live on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and am the outgoing president of the Cambridge Samplers Quilt Guild. We have done alot of outreach quilts for babies and small children and for raffle.
