i balk at the price of rotary cutter blades and the terrible waste that seems to come from using them. i have a pile of blades and it seems to crazy that they can't be sharpened.
i will take this opportunity to rant about fiskar's crap quality though. my lqs was out of the olfa blades and i ended up buying a 2-pack of "titanium coated" fiskar's blades. what a joke. it took 2 blades to complete one project, and i was more than careful with them.

Guilty guilty guilty!
The most stupid one that I have done has already been mentioned - the too-small seam allowances, which inevitably lead to repairs very quickly! Oh, and using fabric that is of low quality, which then required backing it with fusible interface. Yeah, great cost savings that time!!

Quilting is one area in my life I don't make do. I enjoy quilting too much. If any tool is suppose to be sharp and it isn't I toss it. I don't give a rotary blade a second chance to not skip, a seam ripper that I have to tug to cut a thread, scissors that won't cut to the tip of the blade, or a pin that has to be stabbed in fabric. I know when I pick up a tool it will perform like new because it is new.

The itty bitty pieces of batting scraps (1/2"-1") I give to my niece. She uses a small upholstery needle to sew them together to make bigger pieces. She's made couple little coasters with these little pieces. If rotary blades get dull they get pitched. I purchased Nancy's rotary blade sharpener. Used on couple rotary blades and they only lasted on couple pieces of yardage. Pitched them all. Sent the sharpener back to manufacturer with explanation as to how long the resharpened blades lasted. Got my money back. If in doubt, I throw it out!
