Thank you all for your replies! My daughter is actually undecided, but is leaning towards no sashing.... possibly doing a double border, maybe a narrow red followed by a wider black. I was thinking that a narrow yellow border might also look okay.....
Can you tell she inherited my inability to make decisions? LOL!!!

i have this pattern on my to do list also...
i love it with the black as sashing just because it makes all the colors pop equally...
but its your daughters quilt...as long as she loves it in the end thats all that matters
let us know how you do at the fair!

If you are going to do sashing, go with the black. Sets the blocks up very nice. I normally am one for sashing on scrappy type of blocks, but the layout without the sashing really appeals to me. No matter what you choose, there needs to be a small inner boarder to kind of stop the busyness before she adds the final boarder. I would use black for this. Can not wait to see the finished quilt. It is going to be wonderful!!

I love the black and red - in my eyes it makes the small amount of those colors come forward.
The blue or yellow hides the red and black.
It definitely needs a sashing to give a place for the eyes to rest. Question is...what color does your daughter like?
