Baby Lock, Janome and Brother are all made by the same manufacturer.I believe (but am not certain) that Brother is the only line making a "retail" line of machines such as those sold on-line and through traditional commercial outlets like WalMart, Hancock, etc. For Janome and Baby Lock you will have to go to a dealer. I own 3 Brother, mechanical, Cs1000i and Innovis 1250D combination embroidery. Oldest is 12 years; youngest is 2. None has ever been infor repairs. These brands are very good and you will get excellent service, training and demonstration at any Janome or Baby Lock dealer. Good luck and enjoy the process. That's all part of the fun.

He is actually the manager of the first store but is working at the second due to people being on vacation so it is all working itself out. That store has both machines there to compare side by side.
Happy to know that you are going to test drive both. I prefer Janomes but you need to get what you like. Hope you negotiate a good deal!

Note that one of the posts in that thread says the Babylock Melody, Innovis 650Q and Innovis 800:Laura Ashley are all the same machine. You might want to check for reviews of those other machines.
I have a Brother Laura Ashley and love it! Brother makes babylock. You will see that Brother and Babylock are very simular! Test drive, test drive, test drive - then you will see what you really like - that's what I did. Good luck!

The 6600 is not a free arm but the 7700 is. I had the 6500 and jumped to the 7700. Some folks have problems with the 7700, but I love mine.

When you try out the machines make sure you take fabric you will use -- the board stiff fabric they use as samples don't give you any idea how a machine works with normal fabric. Don't know the babyloc, but the Pfaff I had about 8 years ago had a real problem with loops on the bottom when I was piecing.

I also thought the same thing as those who said the salesman might be trying to sell what he has in stock.

I own the Babylock Quilter's Choice, which I think has been renamed the Melody. Bought it in 2006, since then the automatic thread cutter has been replaced twice and the bobbin case area needed work at the manufacturer due to no grease. I think I bought a lemon. However since they finally fixed it, it has been a great machine. I sew 6 to 8 hours everyday. I wish it did have a bigger throat area for machine quilting.

A friend has a Melody and she loves it. I'm thinking of getting a new machine as I piece on a straight stitch machine and quilt on a Babylock Tiara (which I really LOVE!). Another friend has a couple Janomes but always seems to have problems with one of them. I'd definitely test drive both and make sure the dealer will service the machine. Where in Central PA are you? I used to live in Camp Hill - just across the river from Harrisburg. Then 3 Mile Island chased us to Florida where we love it now!! Good luck in your hunting!!

Be sure you get the features you want. size of throat opening is a big deal with quilting. I also like a knee lifter and auto thread cutter. If you also make clothing then a free arm would be nice but the Janome does not have that on the 7700 or 6600.
The 7700 does have free arm.
