I agree, it could be other elements in the store that affected you. At the LQS I go to one of the employees brings her very large dog (who is very docile) to the shop when she works. I am very allergic to animals of any kind and even if I am in another part of the shop, I always know when she comes in with her dog. My throat starts to itch something fierce. I have mentioned this to the manager of the shop but so far the dog is still brought in. The employee puts the dog behind the counter while I am there but that doesn't help if he is allowed to roam the shop while I am not there!!! Duh!

I have not had a problem in a fabric shop except Joann's at this time of year. Reason - the cinnamon items they have out for Christmas. (Same in any other store)

Every time I go to JoAnns I sneeze over and over.I was told that it was the dye in the fabrics. The same with perfume.I think some people bathe in it.

Thanks to everyone for the information and suggestions. I was so surprised when this happened because my sewing studio is filled with fabric and yarn and I never have a problem when I'm in there. Next time I visit that same shop I'll have to take a look around and ask some questions if I get the same type of allergic reaction.

I used to live in So. Texas where there are huge cotton farms. Having seen all the chemicals that cotton plants are sprayed with, I ALWAYS wash my fabric first to get them out. Cotton plants are defoliated chemically and then harvested with huge machines that cut the whole plant, chop it up to separate the boll from the plant, ginned and baled. It's a long way from hand picking cotton, but it relies on many dangerous chemicals. If I knew of a source of organic cotton cloth, I'd use it.

chemicals most likely...but a small shop could also not be clean..like in dusted well, have good ventilation, etc..
if you go to joanns, or a larger fabric place does it happen??

my mom can not go into ANY fabric store...she gets an instant headache...

those chemicals are LONG gone after processing..BUT new chemicals are added when the fabric is shipped back to the US to kill bugs and avoid getting mold!

Sometimes I wish I were, to them and online fabric stores. That would help me pocket the money from an allergist's visit!!!

Actually, our Hancocks closed-- but I would start feeling congested each time I went in there--it was either dust, dyes, or just plain lint from fabrics.

All the more reason to wash your fabrics before you sew isn't it?

This also happens to me in the new clothes department stores... it's the sizing they put on everything to keep stuff looking crisp and fresh and new. Perhaps wear a disposable mask? or just go in for a few minutes; leave to the pkg. lot; got back in after a few minutes, etc..... good luck. Oh, and bring tissues! LOL
