Sewing on the binding is my favorite part of making a quilt. I sew my binding strips together, press, and wind them on a heavy cardboard roll so that they are ready to use once I have completed the quilting. I love the machine sewing and mitering the corners; but I found making the join on the bias very frustrating. I was always doing it incorrectly (e.g., ends twisted, slant incorrect, etc.). I'd baste and have to take out the seam numerous times before I got it correct. Last week, I bought one of those devises to make joining the bias seam easy. I can't wait to try it out. I love the handsewing on the back of the binding. I don't know if it is so relaxing or that I am so happy that the quilt is almost completed.

I hate binding. I cuss every stitch.

dunster 03-21-2011 07:24 AM

Binding is the best part, because that means it's done.

damaquilts 03-21-2011 07:30 AM

I am another one that likes to hand sew binding. I have tried the machine sewn and just don't like the way it looks. I can't get it even. I also can't just sit and watch TV I have to have something else to do so I do binding.
I have one I need to sew on today and will hand stitch the back down for the next few evenings.

Raggiemom 03-21-2011 07:35 AM

I don't like binding so I do it on the machine--goes much quicker that way!

QuilterNana 03-21-2011 07:38 AM

The hand stitching on the back feels like my personal touch of love to the person I am giving the quilt to. Love doing it.

Oh, yes, I hate it with a passion, for me it's the hand stitching of the back part. I don't mind the front, but when I have to sit down and hand stitch the back of the binding, I procrastinate.

QuiltnCowgirl 03-21-2011 08:00 AM

I'm ok with sewing the binding, until I have to do the hand sewing part of it. I am all thumbs when it comes to needle & thread. Always have been. Can't sew a nice blind stitch, thread gets all tangled no matter what trick I try. Why, oh why, couldn't I have taken after my grandmother, well know for her handwork, some of which I have & cherish.

Marty K 03-21-2011 08:05 AM

I find hand sewing the binding relaxing while I watch tv or chat, but I agree basting is not fun....It is hard for me to find a place large enuf, too

Dkm 03-21-2011 08:14 AM

I really like doing the binding. I like having something to do at night while watching tv. I guess the real reward is when that's done.....it's done. Then you can say " Another one bites the dust." LOL

Homemother 03-21-2011 08:18 AM

Binding: UGH! I struggle with it. I think we need a session of positive thinking when it comes to binding. Maybe that will help we poor souls who exponentially dislike this final step in our quilting process. My quilt has been sitting here for a week waiting for the binding to magically adhere itself! Crumb buckets! Maybe we should all commit to spending at least an hour a week on our binding until it's finished!!!

grannypat7925 03-21-2011 09:40 AM

I enjoy doing the binding as that means it will be finished!

Nolee 03-21-2011 09:46 AM

I agree with you because I have neuropathy in my fingers and can't feel anything, so it is very frustrating. I would pay someone to do it, LOL.

Look through the tutorials on here; there is one excellent one on binding that has helped me hide all stitches. It turns out beautifully.

I actually like binding. To me, that's the last little bit that will turn my quilt top into a real quilt! I really enjoy finishing the project and looking at a finished product that I started from scratch. I love hand quilting, so the hand work is relaxing to me. Post a picture when you're done, won't you!

I fear it

Wunder-Mar 03-21-2011 10:22 AM

Binding is my favorite part of the quilt process. As I hand-stitch the binding on the quilt, I think of the person I am making it for and how much I love them, what I admire and respect about them, and what they have shown me.

For community service and charity quilts, I think similarly, trying to picture their face(s) as they receive what I've made and imagine how I have positively impacted their life in showing them that someone unseen and unknown cares about them. I have witnessed many of these faces, and many of them come back to me as deeply fond memories.

I machine sew the bindings on the front then hand bind while watching nothing on tv like Maryb1119. I do this for a friend that hates the binding part. I've done 15 for her so far this yr..

Sorry but that is my favorit part. In fact I often offer to do it for all our oppurtunity and charity quilts. I even sometimes do it for friends. I love to sit in the evening with a quilt over my lap and sew down binding. It is mindless work.

GramaLaura 03-21-2011 10:32 AM

I love to bind! All of my friends who hate to bind call on me to finish the job :-D

mjsylvstr 03-21-2011 11:32 AM

I enjoy hand stitching the binding.

If I have more than one project going.......

(that's a big IF, I always have multi).....at one time,

I save them for movie time..it's a relaxing time and no jumping up and down.

c joyce 03-21-2011 12:06 PM

I love doing the binding...it means that the quilt is completely done!

Me too.

mjsylvstr: Is this after you've machine sewed the binding onto the front of the quilt? Thanks! ~Cheryl

I hate making the binding so my daughter does it for me, ain't she sweet? Then I machine bind it on.

hobbykat1955 03-21-2011 12:44 PM

It's my favorite part...and love sewing the back by hand at night while watching TV

LindaKayCat 03-21-2011 12:46 PM

Just about my favorite part! I can sew the binding on the front side with my machine and sit and hand stitch the back side while watching tv!

trolleystation 03-21-2011 01:01 PM

I like to hand bind. For me that is the final step in putting part of me in the quilt. Since I don't mind the hand sewing, I wonder if I might like hand quilting??? Have to lose that thought as I already have to much to do.

teacherbailey 03-21-2011 01:10 PM

I don't like binding OR quilting....I love the creative part of choosing the pattern, finding JUST THE RIGHT fabrics, cutting and watching it come together as I sew. After that....I'm ready for another one.

dorrell ann 03-21-2011 01:19 PM

Its boring!!!

That's after I get the machine sewing done to the front......after that it can sit and wait for me. It's especially nice in the winter, keeps me warm along with getting the job done.

I enjoy the binding...means FINISHED.

decky 03-21-2011 03:29 PM

I hate binding!!! I told my friend that I would pay her a penny for doing a foot of binding and she will not take me up on it. This had gotten to be our joke and no one else seems to figure it out (non quilters)

Landers 03-21-2011 03:31 PM

I'm with you!

Stacey 03-21-2011 03:42 PM

I love binding the quilt. It means it's close to being done. And then I want to prolong it so I sew slowly.

I love binding. It is one of my favorite parts. I like to machine piece, hand quilt and bind. I Hate to machine quilt. I think that is why I am so bad at it.. I dont know that practice will every make it any better.

jitkaau 03-21-2011 04:04 PM

Every part of a quilt has it's challenges. I find keeping the puckers out of any quilting is my main worry. The binding is easy after that.

I do a lot of small personal sized quilts and most of them are just sewn around the edge and turned inside out.

But I sort of like the binding. It's a sign that a project is done! Well, maybe not LIKE doing it, but happy to do it.

GrannyHanaDa 03-21-2011 04:11 PM

I too love rolling the binding to the back and hand sewing it.
