Does anyone else hate binding a quilt? Love piecing and quilting, but seems to take me forever to get around to binding it. I just don't like binding. Is it just me? or does anyone else have this problem too?

sahm4605 03-21-2011 05:02 AM

I like hand binding the back. I find it relaxing to do. The part I dislike is the basting, but that is because I have no where to do it.

DebbieJJ 03-21-2011 05:02 AM

Me!!!

Kat Sews 03-21-2011 05:04 AM

I dislike handwork most of the time, but I love hand quilting.

I have too many UFOs' just for this reason pab

Maggiesmom 03-21-2011 05:05 AM

Yes, it is my least favorite part. I however, have a friend that loves to do it and sometimes takes my big quilts anddoes it for me. I sew it on, she does the hand work.

I do mine totally by machine & get it done a whole lot quicker this way. Works for me!...

CloverPatch 03-21-2011 05:07 AM

I don't like making the binding. All that ironing, takes forever. But once It goes on it goes pretty quick. Did a binding yesterday. Daughter would come in every 20 min or so and make fun of how fast it gets hand sewn. My problem is once it is done, I don't have anything to sew. So im busily working on my next top now.

frauhahn 03-21-2011 05:08 AM

It's making the binding that drives me crazy!!!! It never goes as easy as it should-inspite of watching lots of videos on making bias binding. I enjoy handsewing it to the back, though.

Calzo 03-21-2011 05:09 AM

I like hand sewing the binding to the back of the quilt but I hate to give up serious quilt time to do it. So I have several quilts languishing on the side lines waiting to be finished. I think I'll take them with me when I visit my mother over Easter. I can sew the bindings while we catch up.

Lori S 03-21-2011 05:09 AM

I really , really do not like doing the binding. All the mystery of the process is gone by that stage . No more wondering how it will all turn out. Just no excitment in doing a binding.
I machine all of my bindings , so I can get it done and on to the next quilt. If I hand sewed my bindings I would do alot less quilts. Just not a great way to end the project.

Stitchnripper 03-21-2011 05:11 AM

I don't mind any of it.

Jaos 03-21-2011 05:15 AM

I love hand sewing the binding to the back of the quilt. There's just something about sitting there with the quilt draped over me hand sewing that makes me feel good.

maryb119 03-21-2011 05:15 AM

I don't mind hand stitching the binding. I like to have something to do in front on the tv in the evenings.

Country1 03-21-2011 05:19 AM

I presently have 4 quilts just laying there waiting to be binded, but I can't bring myself to do it.

Murphy 03-21-2011 05:24 AM

You are not alone!

mzsooz 03-21-2011 05:29 AM

I don't mind the binding at all. Of course I don't do bias. My quilts don't need to be collectors items so it doesn't matter.

The part I hate is the actual quilting. I don't get any enjoyment out of it at all! In fact almost brings on a panic attack!

ibequilting1 03-21-2011 05:30 AM

I agree, binding is my least favorite part of the process.

cmworrall 03-21-2011 05:34 AM

Can I ask how long it takes most of you to hand sew on a binding? I haven't done a lot of quilts - maybe 15 or so - but it seems to take me FOREVER to do the binding. Does it just take practice to get better/faster?

mustangquilts 03-21-2011 05:37 AM

I love doing the hand work on my binding because that means another quilt is getting finished.

On an average I spend about an hour on each side, on a king it can take up to two hours a side.

jfowles 03-21-2011 05:41 AM

I really like doing the binding, my husband is a TV junkie and I'm not so it gives me an excuse to sit down with him and watch TV. We're actually in the same romm, I.m not downstars sewing while he is upstairs watching tv.

sherriequilts 03-21-2011 05:49 AM

I really hate to sew the bindings on. Fortunately, I have TWO (how blessed am I) wonderful friends who are kind enough to do that for me. Then I happily sit and hand hem away. In return I am happy to hem theirs. Works for us!

memepat 03-21-2011 05:55 AM

For years I hated it too. But then I thought, what could I do to make this more enjoyable. Decided to rent a movie or two and bind. Also, I realize this is like a kiss good bye in many cases. I may or may not see this quilt again. Happy quilting maybe I should say binding.

featherweight 03-21-2011 05:57 AM

I do not do the "H" (hand) word.

mtspools 03-21-2011 05:58 AM

Me !! I can make tops, tops and more tops ,hate putting them together and binding.

Well I guess I don't feel TOO bad then. Although I did a 90 x 90 at Christmas that took me closer to 2 1/2 hrs per side.

pamkasperi 03-21-2011 06:02 AM

I hated it when I was using store bought binding. When I ventured out and made my own i love it and want to bind everything!

suezquilts 03-21-2011 06:03 AM

I love it!

bearlea 03-21-2011 06:09 AM

I hate doing binding so much I pay someone to do mine...its worth it to me or they would sit there with no binding..heheheh..blessings

ladydi64 03-21-2011 06:15 AM

I love doing the hand sewing, it goes quickly for me my only problem is my corners hate doing the mitering.

dar627742 03-21-2011 06:17 AM

me too
dar

Needlegrammy 03-21-2011 06:19 AM

I love to do binding ,I don't like to quilt it.

nwm50 03-21-2011 06:21 AM

binding is "NOT" my thing! seems like everytime i bust my back pinning it just right and fabric is all layed out nice and once you start sewing, there's bound to be more than a couple places that puckers or gets out of place! gRRRRRR!

mhansen6 03-21-2011 06:22 AM

I love to bind my quilts. It is the cherry on top of the cake to me. When the binding is done I am totally finished with the quilt and I love that feeling.

Melinda in Tulsa 03-21-2011 06:47 AM

I don't mind putting the binding on, it's the making the binding I hate. When I piece the bindings, I invariable get some backwards...

Minnisewta 03-21-2011 06:52 AM

I don't like doing the bindings.
I think it's because as hard as I try I don't have control of how they will turn out. Some are great and some the corners are awful.

ShirlinAZ 03-21-2011 06:56 AM

I love hand sewing the binding down IF I have sewn it correctly onto the front. I like mitered corners, but last night I sewed the binding down wrong and will probably have to rip it all out and re-do it before I can do the hand sewing. I HATE ripping out.

katsewnsew 03-21-2011 07:04 AM

I Love doing the binding, knowing that it is just the last step to a finished quilt!!!

19angel52 03-21-2011 07:06 AM

Actually - it's the binding I love the best! I suppose it's a combination of two things - I enjoy hand stitching plus the fact it's done when I've finished the binding!!!
