I love binding. I usually do it in the evening while DH is watching TV. I especially like to bind in the winter when I can snuggle up under the quilt.

I don't mind making the binding - I don't like having to put it on and I am fine with turning it and stitching. Someone told me she loves doing the binding because when it is done the quilt is finished.

K.P. 03-22-2011 07:46 AM

I love doing binding, it's like the final 'frame' of the quilt. I also like to do while watching TV, I sew on the front by machine, then drape the quilt over my legs while relaxing and stitch away, do the back by hand and I love the feeling of finally 'finishing' a project, the binding is the final step, like icing on the cake! Many of my friends pay me to bind their quilts becasue they don't like binding either...

Spring 03-22-2011 07:48 AM

Normally its my favorite part but right now I have a quilt that needs to get in the mail ASAP and it is waiting for its binding. I would rather get a root canal then do it....maybe its just knowing that it HAS to get done that has me not wanting to do it.

Mariposa 03-22-2011 07:49 AM

I do mine all by machine, and it works great for me! :)

Ditto here. Especially the snuggle part. LOL DH always gives me a look and says, why don't you just do that on the machine rather than sit there two nights and handstitch. I just tell him i would rather sit and do this than JUST sit and watch TV. I am usually knitting then when I don't have a quilt. However I might try the faux piping on some as my thumbs usually hurt when I handstitch.

"ME" I hate sewing on binding. I think my biggest problem though is my glasses. Need to make an appt. to get my eyes checked. But I'll still hate sewing on binding. It's so boring. My favorite part of quilting is "CUTTING". I love, love, love cutting fabric. Cut all my leftover scraps into squares, strips, etc.

Clara101 03-22-2011 08:13 AM

I like to bind. I am always happy to be on the last step and ready to use of gift the quilt. I sit in my recliner and sew away. In Michigan, January and February are my favorite times, I am toasty warm as I sew.

penski 03-22-2011 09:00 AM

yep !! that is me i dread putting the binding on , but i tell myself if i get it done then i can move on to the next quilt

Rettie V. Grama 03-22-2011 09:03 AM

I don't like it either. And since I have bad arthritis in my right wrist that was broken a few years ago, I can't hand quilt. So, on anything except nicer quilts (charity quilts) I have someone else do it. Charity quilts I do on the machine and pray.

Joanieu 03-22-2011 09:14 AM

I like doing the hand stitching to the back and have gotten pretty good at doing the ladder stitch which is faster then the blind stitch - to me anyway - What I don't like is making the binding or the mitered corners which I do all the time, but some corners come out crappy - or basting the quilt. :)

Butterflyblue 03-22-2011 09:17 AM

Even without doing handwork (I do most my bindings completely by machine) I do not like binding. But I'm always so excited to have the whole thing done by that point that I don't let it sit around, I just buckle down and do it.

redmadder 03-22-2011 09:21 AM

I'm never happy with the way it looks by machine. So I attach the binding by machine, then hand hem it to the back. Its not the sewing, its the time it takes when I could be working on piecing.

wraez 03-22-2011 09:41 AM

yes, once the top is pieced I sandwich it, but lose interest in quilting and binding. I hate that I am that way. I want a finished quilt, can't afford to send them to a LA quilter and have to force myself to proceed to completion. So I have more UFOs than I have finished quilts.

Right now I have a quilt I need to finish for a gift for my granddaughter and I'm dragging my feet, starting 2 new projects instead. Dang it.

terri bb 03-22-2011 09:42 AM

how do you machine bind the back so your stitches don't show??

I do mine totally by machine & get it done a whole lot quicker this way. Works for me!...

wraez 03-22-2011 09:44 AM

Oh but when I DO finish a quilt, I do the binding by machine. It works for me. On kids quilts I'll even use a decorative stitch on the binding in contrasting colors and it looks so cute. I'm not a 'hand' person. The only part of a quilt that I will do by hand is to stitch down the hanging sleeve after it is attached by machine, cuz that can not be done by machine or the stitching would show to the front of the quilt.

Norah McMeeking 03-22-2011 10:24 AM

Binding is not my favorite chore, but if you want to show off the quilt....
I'm just being annoyed by one of those quilter's mystery books where the heroine spends an hour or so binding a quilt (start to finish). Why couldn't she have only finished part of it, like a real person? Or am I terribly slow? (Did I say someone in the story pieced a Drunkard's Path quilt top in a week while she worked full-time in the same story?) Bionic quilters.

sblancarte 03-22-2011 10:28 AM

I enjoy binding-I don't use bias so is a lot easier to cut out-Ilike sewing while watching tv or driving in the car --I can't just sit still.

Ramona GG 03-22-2011 10:34 AM

I can't seem to ever get the corners right when it comes time to hand sew the finishing part of binding! My absolute least favorite part (besides pinning the quilt).

lorils 03-22-2011 11:29 AM

I love to bind quilts. I can do it watching TV or sitting outside watching the kids play. It makes the finished product look so nice. I have seen binding sewn on by machine and I don't think it looks as nice. I will gladly bind anyones quilt if you want me to - for free. You would just have to ship it to me.

Joyce Ann 03-22-2011 11:53 AM

I don't like binding. I just turn over the backing and stitch it down and it gives it a nice border

beachcombr09 03-22-2011 11:54 AM

I usually don't bother with binding, just make sure your backing is 2 inches longer all the way around, and then double fold it over to the front and stitch! That brings the backing fabric into the quilt, and is much quicker and easier than an actual binding!

LIKE!!! (If there were a like button, I'd click it!) Do you whip stitch it or blind stitch it? Thanks, Cheryl :-o

Joyce Ann 03-22-2011 12:15 PM

Actually I do the zig zag stitch

BarbZ 03-22-2011 12:31 PM

TERRY BB, have you seen the faux piping binding tute? Ihaven't done it yet but have seen it and it looks nice. You could use a decrative stitch on the front so it will look good when you turn it over for an idea also.

Farm Quilter 03-22-2011 12:35 PM

Sounds like we need to have a co-op where the cutters can cut, piecers can piece, quilters can quilt (jumping up and down, waving my hand here) and binders can bind.

How can we get into groups of four where we can do what we love the most and still get those beautiful quilts made???

vharris 03-22-2011 12:37 PM

That sounds like my mom; she could bind a quilt in no time and she did such a beautiful job! To this day I still don't know how she did it!

This sounds like a good plan.

I used to hate getting to the end of a project, wanted to move onto the next one. I found a really nice serpentine stitch on my machine and have been using that to sew down my bindings (for my last 3 quilts). Now I get finished much faster and are finishing more. One of those, I just remembered that my Mom hand-sewed one of those... :):):)

Please don't sew while driving. That could be very dangerous.

labtechkty 03-22-2011 01:07 PM

I get excited when I am binding, it means it's almost finished!!!

dilyn 03-22-2011 02:18 PM

I tend to do it on the machine..(shame on me) but I've made a commitment to do my next one by hand. I have developed a slight tremor and it takes some concentration to do!

tdvxh 03-22-2011 02:30 PM

I machine stitch my bindings from the back to the front and use deco stitches the hold it down. I need to get it done quickly. No patience at all for any hand stuff. THANK GOD FOR MACHINES. LOL

If our foremothers had had sewing machines....they would have used them too!

Arleners 03-22-2011 02:39 PM

I think a lot of people dislike it because you are soooooo close to being done with the quilt. The hand sewing can be a really slow part so it is frustrating.

Julianna 03-22-2011 02:50 PM

I machine bind my quilts only because they need finishing, not because I like it!

tangledthread 03-22-2011 02:54 PM

I love binding a quilt,I find it very peaceful and now that I just read the tut on the Ladder Stitch..I think I am going to love it that much more!!

Debbie B 03-22-2011 02:56 PM

I really don't like to put on the binding either, but I hate to baste the quilt sandwich even if I use spray and pins. I have to use the floor & my knees & back are getting old.

Rose Bagwell 03-22-2011 03:29 PM

I am with you, I like the cutting and piecing, but dread the binding.

KayT 03-22-2011 03:45 PM

I like hand binding, it is my favorite part after quilting, I know it has come to a close.
