I always unplug my iron when I leave the room. I have never bought a rowenta because I go through at least one iron a year - no fault of the iron. My current preference is Shark.

Sounds scary. That's the brand of iron I have. I always unplug b/c the red light stays on if I don't. I'll be extra careful after hearing these stories. Thanks for the heads up. I also hope you contact the company about the fire.

I had a Rowenta. Didn't last very long...it fell apart at the top. Quite frankly, they're not very good irons. I've read story after story about them leaking, spitting water, burning up and falling apart. I'll never waste my money on another one. I have had good luck with Black and Decker. I buy the cheap ones without the auto turnoff.

I have had three Rowentas and I do not like them. They do not steam well. I love my inexpensive Black and Decker one. Never had a fire with one of them. My iron is always plugged into a power strip.

Take a picture. Keep the iron. Contact the company. Maybe contact fire dept. to see if they know if any other fire depts. have reports of this brand of iron catching fire like this and if not where to report it.

My Rowenta leaks. I don't know why I still have it because I don't use it. I have a Black and Decker Digital Advantage which I am very happy with.

I had the same exact thing happen with my last Rowenta. ( notice I said last , there will not be another). I contacted the company... and got less than a good response. the company rep told me unless I could produce my orginal reciept , they were unable to help.

Good thing you were nearby to put the fire out. It could have been a disaster.

There are "real" Rowentas...the German-made models, and the "cheaper" ones, made in China. Note that there really isn't much of a price difference, but there's a BIG quality difference. I've had a couple of the Chinese versions and they don't last long. But regardless of brand, it's a better idea to unplug ANY iron before leaving the room.
