I just use a small pair of Fiskars. Have had them for years (read decades). Use them for my hand quilting and needlepoint/embroidery threads. Have another pair of no-names upstairs in the sewing room. Also have several other pairs of larger scissors in the sewing room. I grab what's handy.

My wife loves her Gingher stork embroidery scissors for cutting threads, but my favorite is 88650 on this page. It probably has a lot to do with hand size, right- vs. left-handed, hand strength, etc. Thanks Ellie for the link!

I like to use them to rip, too. Of course, I like to use large, long quilting pins to rip, too (we all know I'm weird). I just can't figure out how people (like Eleanor Burns) rip with rotary cutters...

My favorite nippers are made by gold seal. They are the same kind that are used in sewing factories and last a long, long time. They can be sharpened just like any good pair of scissors, they have a ring on the side to wear while you are sewing at the machine so you never have to set them down and pick them back up to use them while working. The point is thin enough to use for small un-sewing tasks.

I got mine on ebay....50 cents a pair, but I had to buy a dozen.....should last me a while.

I recently bought the Fons & Porter snippers (on eBay) .... they are super sharp and I like the color ~ bright Red, so I can spot them easily!!

I buy $3 to $4 pairs and use them for 3-4 years and then rebuy. It is too expensive to have them sharpened.

I had my grandmother's snips that her teacher gave her when she was in high school. They were heavy and felt great in my hand. Easy to get sharpened too being quality metal. I took them to a class at my guild and left them on the ironing board. I went back to get them a few minutes later and they were gone. I immediately asked everyone to look for them for me. No one could remember who was at the ironing board or around it. No one ever returned them. I still get sad thinking a guild member took them. One day they will forget and have them at a class or workshop! I learned to leave my good notions home and take the cheap ones to classes and workshops.
