One of the local quilting guilds makes tactile quilts for blind babies. If you do a Google search for "blind baby quilts" or "tactile quilts" there are many hints and suggestions.

don't forget some minkie--it feels so good and perhaps some of that polyester that looks and feels like satin (might need to be backed with a fusable stablizer.

Thank you for the suggestion. I never thought about that. I really love this board!

What a great idea. I'd just cut squares from the different fabrics and then cross-hatch with quilting. Should hold up just fine.

if you want to use all kinds of textures and types of fabric, I believe you have to forget about washability. Some just won't wash. You may have to stabilizie some of the fabric and take larger seam allowance and in some cases double stitch to hold it from fraying.

You're right about some fabrics not washing. I will try to stay away from and use as much variety of durable, washable fabric as I can. He may rarely use it, but I want to construct it as if it will be touched, hug and drug daily.

I just saw wide quilt binding at JoAnn's today. They were in different prints, not just the solids. They would be very interesting on a childs quilt. Good luck with your project. I am sure it will be well appreciated.

Can you wash a quilt made with satin fabric?

I am not sure if you can or not, but my guess would be yes as it probably is not a true satin. The blankets you buy in the stores that have a satin binding are washable.
