if you want to use all kinds of textures and types of fabric, I believe you have to forget about washability. Some just won't wash. You may have to stabilizie some of the fabric and take larger seam allowance and in some cases double stitch to hold it from fraying.

You're right about some fabrics not washing. I will try to stay away from and use as much variety of durable, washable fabric as I can. He may rarely use it, but I want to construct it as if it will be touched, hug and drug daily.

I just saw wide quilt binding at JoAnn's today. They were in different prints, not just the solids. They would be very interesting on a childs quilt. Good luck with your project. I am sure it will be well appreciated.
